I don't know of any places near Downriver, but there are a couple stores in Ann Arbor that have just about everything. Merchant of Vino on Plymouth has a lot, but Big Ten Beverage House on Packard has a lot more. They even have fresh hops.
For a beginner, its best to buy a can or two of flavored malt and follow the instructions. Most come with packets of yeast. Unless you know what you are doing, use the yeast that comes with the malt. Pales, Wheats, Ambers and the like are good for beginers.
Don't try any Barley Wines or Russian Imperial Stouts until you get the hang of it.
