Ill' take a 100 yard poke at a deer if I have a good rest and a clear shot.I put down three deer at a pinch over a 100 yards with my old Tauras model 44 in 44. mag.I got another one at about 80 yards and three more at 60 yards or less.
I hope my new Ruger SBH will do as well as my old Tauras.
So.........How far do you feel comfortable shooting at a deer with your handgun?

40 yards for me right now. I have only had the gun a couple of years. I know it can do a lot more (44mag/scoped) but I use it like a bow right now. If I am hunting where if I can shoot more than 50 yards I carry the long gun. You WILL see a post of my handgun deer if I get lucky enough!!!! Any handgunners carry shooting sticks?

Well, depends on which handgun iam using have taken 300yd shots on on chucks with a bolt action built on a sako action, one deer at almost 175 with a 308 savage striker, and a few at 80 yds or so with my 44/454

This year I will be taken out my Beretta .40 S&W and won't take a shoot over 30 yards with it.

I can comfortably put rounds in the 7 ring and up all day long at 100 yards, but in the woods is another thing. Probably wouldn't take a shot longer than 70-80 yards depending on the rest and situation.

Glad to see the hand-gunners chiming in. I'll take a shot out to 80 yards and some time a touch more if condition allow(good rest and a clear open shot). I'm using a ruger super blackhawk hunter. 44mag. It shoot about a 1.5 group at 50 yards.

What kind/weight of rounds are you guys using?

I've got a super redhawk .44 mag with a red dot scope. I've only had it a couple of years so I'm not as proficient as I'd like to be. I look at like bow hunting as well, for now anyway. I'll use it on a doe and use the 870 on the bucks.

A tad over a hundred if the conditions are right. for example: A nice buck standing or slow walk broadside out to 125 yds...BAM!!!
Taurus .454 casull w/2X Leupold, I can keep a 6" group at 100yds with a rest.

I just bouhgt a Super Blackhawk Hunter 44. mag. about a week ago.I shot it today and I got about 1 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards also.I really like this gun and with the 4x simmons scope it seems to be very accurate.I shoot Hornaday XPT 240 gr. JHP.What do you shoot out of your's?

I shoot Hornaday XPT 240 gr. JHP also. Shot a small doe last year at 65 yards with the 210 gr. last year. I going to try the 240's this year. She didn't run very far with the 210 but I think the 240 should work a little better. I'll let you know tomorrow(finger are crossed)

Good luck to all.

I have taken a few deer with my super blackhawk. I hand load all my ammo. I have taken a few bear over the years as well. I use a 300 gr plated soft point with 22.6 grains of powder. The recoil is better at a lower charge. I have a 4x leopold on this gun and it shots very well at 125 yards off a rest. Off hand I don't know if I would shoot more then 50- 80 yards. My other hand gun is a custom 338 JDJ single shot built on a contender frame with a 1 1/2 pound trigger. I have used this deer, bear and elk hunting. This is a awsome gun however I don't get to use it that much. I have to neck down 444 marlin cases to fit a 338 bullet on it. I have a 2 x 7 leopold topped on this one. I have tryed other scopes but do to the recoil it breaks the scopes after awhile. I have all my guns topped with Leopolds because I have never had troble with them. my 2 cents

Where I hunt i'm on a rock outcrop that looks down into a valley but there is a second rise 50 yards in front of me. I will only shoot a deer with in that 50 yard zone, but would wait till about 25 yards for the shot with my 686 .357:p

I am thinking of using my Kimber .45 on a doe this year. I will take only a perfect 25 yard (or less) shot. It would be nice to get some practical use out of it.
