I'm looking for some ideas where to go deer hunting with my girl friend this year. The first 2 days we will be hunting close to home in Allegan county. Due to taking so much time off for bear hunting I will not be able to get back out until the 20th through 23rd. I would like to find a area in rife zone that will hold some promise of a buck or two. The UP is not out of the question as long as it's not a 10 hour drive. I used to hunt in crystal falls area many noons ago with my first wife, however that is 10 hours away and I don't have that kind of time to travel and hunt. I have also hunt in Traverse City for a few years with no luck. So any ideas would be get. Please let me know what you guys think. I would really like to put her on a nice buck this year, last year she took a nice doe during muzzle loading season.
Thanks

There is plenty of state and federal land in the eastern U.P. Do a small amount of homework, and you'll succeed in finding areas that have little or no hunting pressure.
I'm not going to give you exact areas, but my advice is this: By next weekend, the RV's and wall tents are going to start appearing in the woods like mushrooms in the spring. The damn orange ribbons on trees are gonna be so thick they're gonna look like leaves. Stay away from these areas. Get off the main forest service roads; the further north you go, the fewer hunters. Be willing to walk-in a mile or so from the beaten path. And be prepared for lower deer densities of 7-10/mile.
Best wishes for a safe, fun season~

I agree with eastern yooper. The EUP holds many promising areas. You can scout good looking areas on the internet. Look on terraserver for clear cuts, they are easy to spot. Make sure you check the date of the fly over. Lots of areas were photographed in '98 and if you see what looks like a fresh clear cut it should be perfect by now.
Good Luck.

I think the NE LP would be a good bet and here is why. Ever since the TB thing hit, less people are hunting this area. The past few years the quality of the bucks in Alpena, Presqe isle, Montmorency has been allot better. Plenty of large tracks of state land. Like the previous post get in there along ways and you will be by yourself. PM me and I'll give you a spot I know of with good deer numbers.

Would suggest Drummond, but go deep. Listen to what Eastern Yooper says.
