I know this has been up before, just cant find it so, does anyone know about the magellan sportrak model? I plan to use one just for hunting. Going to blinds, my car things like that. I know very little about them but, one of my main questions is if you set a route like "car"-"blind 1" - "blind 2" - "meeting area" - "car" can you delete it and make a new one some other place or is it stored forever? any/all help would be great.
I don't know about the sporttrak, but................
The 330M is an older model Magellan that Cabelas is selling right now for 169. It has built in maps, and comes with software and a data cable. You can store all you'd like on the computer program, and put whatever you want on the handheld. Plus, it's WAAS, which is nice for me. I bought it because I had a 315 that took a dump, but the mount and dc power cable could be used. I was happily surprised to find out it's WAAS and came with software and the data cable. Building routes on the pc, or saving a track from using it in the field is pretty easy. The detail of the maps on the gps and pc software doesn't show every street, or that much detail, but it does show many landmarks and major streets. I can give you all the gory detail you'd like if you want me to.

I only really need for is in and out of the woods, looking for different areas. Thats why I want to make sure you can "delete" things after I am done, if you know what I mean.

If you are looking to buy one,I would check out a Garmin Rino 110. For about $170 you get a good GPS AND radio capabilities as well. I absolutely love mine. :) (actually I have the 120, but they are $250 for the added mapping capeabilities.)

rr,
you can go in and re-name it, change it or delete it manually. just scroll to your waypoint list and highlight it and at then highlight what you want to do.

For the radio feature on the 120, do you need a FCC license? My nephew has one and says he has to get a FCC license to use it. Just seems weird to me.

I, seriously hope you read the manual. You should also gain some experience in using the unit before treking into a woods. I have seen too many people pick one up, load in the batteries and walk into a woods only to find it's too technical or they don't understand it. Then it's put on the shelf, never to be used again.
From that point they bad mouth GPS forever.

If it's a GMRS radio, which I think it is, you technically do need a license which is a one time $75 fee.

In the setup options you can turn off GMRS, thereby only using FRS.
The Rino is really simple to operate compared to a lot of the other ones I have tried. It is almost a no brainer.

The GMRS radio does require a license, the link is below,

I was trying to get one in the next week or so to try out a few times. I dont need the radio part, we have them. I believe I am down to the sportrak or the rino sounds good. I dont mind dropping 150-200 for it as long as its simple to use. I am going to look at the cabelas site and read up on the rino one some more, thx for the feedback on this. You almost have to have one to try out new hunting areas. This all start when I was out just kind of looking around and found a good area. Now, find your way back to that spot a long with where the scrapes/rubs were. So, thats what I want it for, Mark my start point (car) and each spot that I like and so on. That 's way I asked about "delete" points so I can just go back to where I want.

Magellan's 330M (http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/product.asp?PRODID=93)
Don't forget, it comes with Mapsend Streets and a data cable, so you can download all of your routes and waypointes to your PC.
I would just add that I'm not really sure how well the 330 stacks up against others in the durability category.

Well, I got the "sportrak map". It came in the mail today. WHO writes these "info" books anyways ? Looks nice, not as simple as it sounded but, like anything you have to use it enough to get used to it first. Going out shooting this sunday so I am going to let the wife drive so I can fiddle around with it. I will post a "product review" on it after I use it for a bit.

I found (at least on my boat) If I use my gps every time I go out nice day/ night / fog-- you gain confidence with it. familiarity is the key to any gps. and as far as deleting or adding waypoints. I think all gps units allow you to delete any waypoints that were user entered.

Yep, got the delete part down (almost lol). Now I am trying to have "planned routes" that are stored for later use (hunting blinds w/start points) I am going up to the Mio area this weekend so this will be the first "test". If I dont post here on Monday...CALL SEARCH & RESCUE :D :D :D Just kidding...I hope...

I just picked up a garmin 76 map unit today, man these new units are great! this thing locks on in about 15-30 seconds seems very accurate I set a position and came back later to within 3 feet of it. The first unit I had a magellen 2000 finaly freaked out on me this summer at harbor beach I was about 4 miles east of the harbor and it said the harbor was 17 deg and 658 miles away (kinda scary if it was foggy) But that old gps had saved me many times on the lake and kept me from spending the night in the woods, you have to practice with it and learn to use it could be a lifesaver!

We (my brothers and sisters) just bought my Dad a Garmin V for Christmas this year. Cabela's had them $100 off. I am a GPS kind of guy and I am impressed with this unit.
I'm sure it will be my job to show him how to use it and I will give a product review when I'm done. So far, this little thing is very good.

Pit bull I used the garmin 76 for years on my boat. It's a good unit one thing I liked about it is the way it's able to work even at slow speeds. great for trolling or walking.

Been using it for awhile now and I think I am getting the hang of it :) Marked my way to work, up north, mom and dads, friends house and even got my blinds marked. Biggest problem with these things is the BOOK ! Who writes these things anyways....Went up north today and walked right to my blind with no problem, my last trip up I "marked" them so I could try it today. So, all in all pretty happy with it.

this is actually quite funny. we bought some of gmrs/frs radios for work, and after me telling them about having to get a license for them, they called the fcc. the fcc said as long as you dont operate on the gmrs channels, you dont need a license, but if you plan on using them you had better get a license.
