My morning started early, I left my house at 5:00am, headed for Lexington and was in my stand by 6:30.
It was absolutely beautiful out this morning, a little warm and foggy but it was perfectly still with little to no wind.
At about 7:15 I decided to try my bowgrunter plus, so I let out three faint grunts, and within 2 minutes I heard something thrashing around in the brush about 15 yards behind me.
I looked back over my right shoulder and there he was and he was heading right at me :), as he passed right under my stand, I was able to pick up my bow, attach my release and get ready to draw.
He ended up stopping about 15 feet from the base of my tree and offered me a good shot at the lungs, so I squeezed the release and the arrow hit it's spot :D.
He only ran about 60-70 yards and that was about it.
It was a great morning to be in the woods!

Just wondering if this is your first buck. If not, why shoot a yearling buck so early in the season? if you need meat, why not take a doe? Just wondering what the mindset is when shooting a buck that size this early in the year.

Excellent job on the deer....and to the qustion above...Do I take the bait. Nah not worth the time, since every crowd is bound to have one.
Actually I have to let my pup out so he can use his right now, would't want an accident smelling up the house.
Enjoy those steaks.

Congrats BTC. Looks like a nice tender buck.
You need a hand gettin it butchered up. B] trust me I'll show you the good stuff. Hmmmmm let's see these are the hams...these are shoulders......what's that?? no no that long piece up there on the back no that's not anygood....but I'll take it with me for.....uh...stew or something yeah yeah stew B]
Plenty of room for all God's creatures....right next to the mashed potatoes.
Thanks everybody for your responses, well almost everybody!
I made sure I got some pictures from the field so as not to get grilled for posting shots taken in the back of my pickup.
huntworkhunt & deputy: I just purchased that bowgrunter plus after last season, and after using it on only two occasions this season I'm very impressed to say the least with the product. It's just a very user friendly design that makes my old grunt call obsolete.
bunji_hunter: Maybe I'll take you up on that offer but, the backstraps go home with me :D.

congrats BTC. The warm weather didn't seem to stop that buck from investigating the grunts you made. Nice shot, and a good start to the season.

Congrats on the buck BTC!
As far as I know it is still the individual's choice as to what deer they decide to harvest.......be it the hunter's first buck or 100th. As long as the deer is humanely taken and its full potential is utilized for its excellence as table fare, that's what really matters.
Congrats again!

Ahhh some classic Michigan "hunter" responses to a simple question. I wasn't trying to sweat the guy it was a legit question. We hear lots of talk about how guys want to get that "buck of a lifetime" and then there are all kinds of photos and stories on this site about 4-points, 5-points and 6-points taken during the first week of the season. I'm just curious as to why the guy didn't wait. That's it.
But isn't it funny how some guys get so jumpy about a simple question? It's pretty revealing actually. Me, I'd simply give an explanation to a question unless I'm ashamed of the answer.
Funnier still, is that the guy who shot the deer had perhaps the most civil response to the question. It certainly is his choice as to which deer he shoots. There just seems to be a movement afoot all across the nation towards better deer management and many guys are passing on young deer. I simply wondered why this gentleman elected to take the buck he took so that I could consider his thoughts with those I hear from those who choose to pass on bucks.
But I guess a little critical thinking is too much to ask.

Nice job! Looks like you made a great, clean-kill shot.
As for the size of the deer, to each his own. Every hunter has their own definition of a "shooter" deer. To me, as long as it's in season and harvested in a legal manner, there's really nothing more than can be said.....period.
Great job on a good kill BTC!

Nice work! Some times things come together nicely, just never for me.
Even if it was a spike, I would fill my tag early so I could spend my time fishing. Especially in the area you hunt. Many of us are very limited in the time we have available to spend hunting. When you have a job, limited vacation time, and a family, you take a nice deer when you can. Leave the massive trophy deer for real manly hunters like Tony.

Very cool!! I have only shot one deer with my bow in 8 years of trying!!! One shot, one kill.....WAY TO GO!!

There is no need to be second guessing anyones (legal) decisions. All this does is give anti's ammunition.
Any argument can be made in any direction if the author so decides. <edited as no not conflict with above statement -- PM me if you want an example comment against trophy only hunters>
I think it is a great deer and I hope I see its twin, its big brother, its sister, or even its little brother. Then at that time I will decide if I will shoot or not. You never know when your season will get cut short, so I tend to lean toward getting the first one for the freezer. I have passed on many deer, and I have shot many deer. I am proud of all the ones I shot and did not shoot.
"A successful hunt is a day in forest and you get to SEE a deer."
May all your hunts be successful
Tony,
I'm just curious, why, in your last post, is "hunter" in quotations?

Nice job on the buck!!!! As far as Tony saying the deer is "small" well Mr. T, where is your trophy" tirty tree pointer"? As far as I'm concerned, you can't eat the horns and the younger deer are much better table fare. As far as my season, I will be heading back to the thumb for 5 days to bowhunt and pheasant hunt on Monday. Good luck guys!!!!:D >------->Al:D
