Okay, here's the deal.

New boat. I might use it once or twice yet this year. Do they charge for an entire year if I bring the registration up to date? (Previous owner's registration expired in March).

I'm not sure I can justify paying for an entire year when I'll probably use it once or twice before the next "boat year" starts.

Beave,
it doesn't matter when you register it. You're going to have to pay for THREE YEARS. It's not renewed each year. You're not going to be out that much if you register it now and only use it a couple of times.

But if I register it next year I'll get a sticker good for 04, 05, and 06. If i register it now I'll get a sticker good for 03, 04, and 05.

Boat registration isn't as expensive and a vehicle. My boat is $24 for three years. What size boat you have?

Beave,

"Technically" you DON'T have a choice. You are by law supposed to register the boat within 15 days of transfer of ownership.
I'm not sure what size your boat is but it's only $17 for 3 years for boats 12-16' and $42 for 3 years for boats 16-20'. Not really a lot of money either way.

Thanks Jpollman.

I know it was really expensive for the salmon boat, but that's quite a big one.

From the SOS website: "Michigan's title fee is $15. If it has been more than 15 days since the date of assignment to the new owner, there will be a $15 late fee. " Link (http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-12547-76724--F,00.html)

Don't forget about the new trailer registration too...I think it's a one time $75 fee for a boat trailer (under 2500 lbs).
