About two weeks ago we started to do a report on insects (invertabrates). I chose the cicada. We had to fill in twelve cards with lots of information.
I will tell you some few facts about them. If you are up close to a cicada, you beter have earplugs on, beacause there the
loudest insects alive.
I am also doing a report in socail studies. We have to
draw a country, and name it. I named my country Yoshi Island. :D
We have to draw in transportation, places to
visit, and we also have to have human enviorment interactoins.
We have to put relative location, and exact location.
We are almost done with our science report, and our
socail studies report.:eek::D

That's great!
I have one Cicada and 8 shed skins in my insect collection.
Keep up the good job!
Make sure you put a few hunting and fishing hot spots on your island.:D

I have caught a cicada before. They are a really cool
insect, the sheddings are also cool.
We have found some cicada sheddings on the pine
tree outside. I have also found some cicada sheddings
at school.
There pretty big too. They are also an ugly insect.
I forgot to put hunting and fishing areas
in my country:eek: . I will try to find some cicada
sheddings for you trout:D .

When I lived in Illinois we had Periodical Cicadas and we used dig them out of the ground. Those are really neat because it take them 13-17 years to become an adult. I'm not sure if we have them here or not.

Now we are doing a report on indians. Last year , in
4th grade we did a report on indians.
The tribe that I did the report on was the Ottawa. We had to make a poster and write down facts about them.
I am also a fan of Michigan. I watched the game over the
weekend. Michigan won, I think the score was 32 to 3.
I have a background on my computer with a Michigan player.
The player is #9. Do you know who that is?

Fraid knot, fishin'boy also had to do a report last year (he was in 5th grade) on Indians. I can't remember which on he did his on  DId you add your places on your country for fishing and hunting? YOu should see if you can scan it and put it on here! I'd also like to see a picture of the cicada shells that you have. DO you now how to post pics yet?
We have a floor mat near our door (u of M) that way we can wipe our feet on them everyday:eek: Just kidding fishin'boy is a Michigan fan and his dad (Rivernut) is a MSU fan. I think that's the only difference between the 2 guys. They do and act the same...fishihn'boy is a "mini-me" of his dad!!!!:D

Have your Mom send me your address and I'll send you a real Stone Arrowhead.
It is made by Mike Cook , a Modern day flintknapper.

That sounds cool, Trout. I have been wanting an arrow head
for a while. I really appreciate it, I will take reall good care of
it, So my brothers don't get to it. :D
I can use it for my indian report, by looking at it
and drawing it on my poster board. I can also take it in and show it to my class.

Be careful undoing the tape, maybe have DAD help.
Mom might hurt her fingers :) Sharp object ya know......
BTW check with the school if you can take it there as it "was" a weapon 5,000 yrs ago.

Like Trout said, check with the school. I asked my principal if I could bring in a "musket" but he thought that was a little much!!

FraidKnot, Let me know when you get the arrow head.
I also have some cordage I made from Swampmilk weed fiber.
I can send you some.
I have a drum I made from a deer and I have done pottery from clay I dug myself and fired in an outdoor fire.
Frank Ettawagesshek showed me how.
You should have Jim Miller come to your school and do a show and tell.
Jim is a good friend of mine and he visits schools all around the nation.
Your school has monies to pay him, so maybe it will work out.
Jim owns Willow Winds.
Go to

Tell Jim you are a friend of mine, he is a good person.
Have fun

Jim Miller came to a school in my school district and he was amazing. Not only can he do amazing things like were done long ago but his stories are really funny/informative too. Neat guy.
I am glad your teacher has given you a good meaningful project, Fraidknot. Sounds like your making your work fun. That's what it's all about.

FraidKnot,
Cordage is a string sorta.
Ancient people used it to tie things together, it is alot like twine.
Some type of cordage are so strong even grown ups can't break it.
You make cordage from the outside layers of certain plants such as Dogbane, Swamp milkweed, or the inner bark of certain trees.
I know all the plants and trees used can be found outside your house.
Maybe after deer season we all can get together and do another walk. Then I can show you how to make cordage and what plants and trees to use. Ask you mom and dad if they would like to do that.

Thanks. I wonder if Jim Miller would like to come to my school?
Thats pretty cool about cordage, I have never seen cordage before.
I bet that my parents would be very interested on going on a hike.
My class really liked that arrowhead. I passed it arround and everybody thought that it was really cool. I still have the arrowhead sitting on my window sill, in a safe case. Thanks again for that arrowhead.
