On my way home (from driving around) I zoomed past a field that was full of turkeys. I turned around and went back, parked at an opening. There was about 50 turkeys in the field, but more important there was a big bodied buck. He was feeding on the new growth hay. He lifted his head and all I could see was antlers. I pulled out my spotting scope and I was speechless. I counted 6 tined on his left beam and his G2 looked around 11-12 inches with tall brow tines. Then I noticed his right beam was broken off at his right brow tine. Almost made me want to cry.

My next question is... Did the rut start? His neck look a little thick for this time of year and he was traveling with two does. Strange.

NO, the rut has not started. The rack may have been broken at early velvet, hit by car, ran into something, but not by fighting already. They may spar very lightly now, but not the nitty gritty.

For the buck being bigger, he was probably 3 1/2+ so that is why his neck looks big, Because it is!!!

Not because of the rut

Thats a shame he has broken off one side of his rack. Sounds like he is a beauty. He must just enjoy the company of the does as I would have to say the rut is far from started.

You know PS, I would bet he is a 3.5 year old or better which means he is a shooter in my book. Unless I knew he was living in my safe haven. ;)

I hope that he makes it until next antler growing season.
