Got a old Chrysler sitting in my garage. BIL brought it over for me to look at. Can't get spark. All new coils, P&C, short block....

Will call him or I can give my number.

If I recall correctly the old Chryslers had a pickup shoe under the flywheel that would cause that problem if it went bad.

Paul, electric diagram doesn't show a pickup shoe. BIL is an electrical eng. and has done all he can think of. I'm thinking its something simple that is being overlooked.

Change the plug?

ESOX

I didnt notice the points and condensor part before. No pickup would be there........I cant even begin to count the number of times I have had brand new condensers that were bad. I'd have it tested at an auto electric place. Now I dont even change them unless I know they are bad for a fact.

Kirk, do you think we'er stupid?? LOL

All points, plugs, coils are brand new. Twin cyl. so I can't see both being bad.

I only looked at it briefly yesterday. No hurry for it ,will take more time with it when theres nothing better to do.

Is this a car? If so...check a think called a Ballast Resister or something like that...if it's not a car/vechicle...then I am lost...LMAO:D

Hey Don, have you really seen many 2 cylinder Chrysler cars? ;) Sorry! :p

Hey John, my brother had an Omni that would only run on two cylinders since the day it came off the line! :)

Yup, that Omni rates right up there with the Gremlin....... true classics. :)

Just took a few minutes to look at it. Tested a few things, hotwired a few things, still no spark.

It seems that Tonga's computer has come down with some sort of an infection. Last that I knew, IFN was going to try to troubleshoot the problem and clean up the hard drive.

Mike, I don't have a clue what it should be gapped at but the coil gap on the flywheel is important.

I used a piece of paper to gap mine on the chainsaw.

Heck Chrysler's have cylinders??? I thought that's why they are always on tow trucks...no cylinder's...LMAO

Are the points and coils properly grounded? I usually set dwell/timing with an ohm meter or "buzz" box along with a dial indicator. I dont fool much with outboards but if I'd be a rich man if I had a dollar for everytime someone brought me a lawnmower, tractor, snowblower or snowmobile engine that told me they "replaced everything and it doesnt have any spark" and I find the "new" points either internally shorted or open across the contacts or the condensor is shorted. "Missing" ground wire to coil, ect. I make a habit of the P&C them before I install them so if I do have a problem I know who to blame! Good Luck!

Checked all gaps and wires. Everthings seem to be OK.

I have worked on many 2 & 4 cycle motors as well as the old car engines with P&C's. And have worked on a few outboards. Not an expert, but now I'm stumped.

I remeber once I had a problem replaced everything (on a truck)
after 100s spent it turned out to be the condenser.

I GOT SPARK!!!!!!!!!

So much for electric engineers. Check over everything, seemed fine.
Wish I had the key switch here tho. There is a wire block on the engine to distribute different wires to different places. He had a wire(red) that goes to the key switch looped back to the block. Another wire(blue) goes from the key switch to the block. This wire was doing nothing. He told me it should be just like the blue wire is there. I unhooked it and I had spark.

Don't have the gas tank here but a shot of Gumout seems to get it going a little.

Good going Mike !!!!

Way to go Mike, with out being able to see it I figured it had to be a "wiring" issue. Should have asked about a "key" switch. I was assuming it was a smaller outboard (5-10 hp) that had "internal" controls.

Glad you got'er figured out!

Glad to hear you got it Mike ,,I wish I could have been some help but the old PC has been on the frits,,,,I think IFN has her all fixed up now , I hope,,,anyway glad to hear you worked it out and I will add a "WELL DONE"

Thanks Tonga. Now that I got spark when I get the time I got to get it to run. Its got a new short block, anything special I should do be for staring it?

TONGA
09-24-2003, 04:54 AM
nothing to special,,the engine should be all lubed up from assembly, just make sure she is getting fuel and take it easy on her for a while,,,If you don't mind me asking what was the reason for the rebuild?

WALLEYE MIKE
09-24-2003, 01:46 PM
Brother-in-laws son's motor. Don't know why he got a short block other than it was cheap(ordered by someone years ago and never oicked it up) Nephew bought the boat and I don't know if it ran then. Started out with no spark I think and went from there.

Its a late 70's Chrysler 25 hp.

TONGA

the reason I ask is because I was woried that he might be bolting a old problem to a new powerhead!,,,youknow like if the old powerhead ran lean and burned a piston he might burn another one up by way of an old carb that was ill adjusted,,,
so you may want to ask him about the old powerhead.

Haven't looked at it since winter. (frozen water in the tub) Hooked up the gas and after a few cranks ------aways she goes. Smokes alot but seems to run fine. BIL is happy as hell.

Glad to hear all is well Mike! the smoke should get better with a little run time..
Of course he will have to take you out for the maiden voyage
