Hi Everyone,

I have just enrolled to your forum and I thought I'd introduce myself.

My name is Terry Webster and I live in a little township just South of Alpena, MI. known as Ossineke. I live on a farm with my wife Nancy and 2 children, Matt who is 16, & Allison who will be 14 this October. I was actually using a search engine to try and locate the Nuge's outdoor web. and found this one. I looked it over and
liked what I saw so I joined up.

Anyhow, I enjoy hunting and fishing and go out on Lake Huron quite often to do some downrigging and outrigging for salmon and trout. I do all my own reloading of rifle, handgun, and shotshells (12 & 20 ga.) I have however run into a problem with my arrows and hope that someone here can steer me in the right direction.

I was target shooting with my bow on a 3-d whitetail and noticed that my fletchings are peeling back off of the shaft (Carbon Shaft arrows) I don't have a jig set-up as yet for re-doing the fletchings and I was wondering if there was a good recomendation from anyone out there as to the length fletching and pitch for replacements. These are the originals that are coming off and they seem to me to be too small in length (4")

I guess I'm kinda spoiled, .. my dad made all of our arrows when I lived at home with his jigs and fletching burner and they always were at least 5" with a slight twist to them as they went down the shaft. It was quite some time ago that I have shot any that he has made, but I do remember how well they flew and how long they lasted!! Nothing like made at home arrows!!

This is my first set of Carbon shafts and the were store bought they just never seemed right to me as far as the fletchings were concerned. I was just wondering if there were ANY of you out there who have re-worked carbon shafts and could recomend some good improvements over the stock shaft fletchings. Any and all advise would be appreciated!

Welcome.

You'll find that this board has collectively more knowlege and less stuffy attitude than almost any out there. None of the people here, (I said none but maybe meant very few) are out to prove how smart they are by pointing out how dumb you are. If they have knowlege they don't mind sharing it.

Some have come here wanting to show off and show up the rest, but they don't last too long because the rest won't play their argumentation game for long. If they do get a good hot arguement going, it better be productive, or the moderator's close them out.

I like it that way.

You'll enjoy your time here.

The arrows question might fit better in the bowhunters or traditional archery forums but may work just fine right here.

Thanks for the warm welcome Huntingfool43, Steve, & Sarge!

The suggetion for relocating my questions was a good one, ... I guess I was kinda on a roll introducing myself and just went in on a question I had. I'll leave it here for a while to see if I can get any replys to it. (Your's came mighty quick) If not, then I will relocate it.

I don't want to post the same question twice on the same site unless I really have to. This way I won't be one of those people who post the same thing multiple times on the site.

(I kinda hate it when people do that)

Thanks again for the FAST, warm welcome!

Naw! its just that none of us have the kind of jobs that make us wait till evening to check the site. :D

Don't beat me up, when I said none, I meant of us who answered right away. I know there are a lot of hard workers out there. After all, they can all afford nice fast computers eh?

7MM, welcome.

I fletch all my carbons with straight 5 inch vanes. I bought a Martin Jig (30 bucks) and do it myself because it's easy and handy. I clean off the old glue and then wipe down with alcohol. Now when I buy shafts, I buy them bare, cut to size and put everything on them.

I travel thru your area on my way up to our "camp" which is just north of Alpena in Presque Isle. Your a lucky dog to have such a great place to live and raise a family, I love it up that way!

Sorry, not much of a bow hunter so I cant help you with your arrow issue.

Do any fall salmon fishing? I'm heading back up that way in a week or two and will be stopping in Harrisville, Black River and Rockport to check out and do some shore/pier fishing. If you can supply any reports I'd appriciate it!

And again, Welcome! - Burskee :D

THANKS for your input FREEPOP, ... I kind of thought that a 4 inch vane wasn't correct it just looks SO SMALL !

Plus the height of the fletching was only about 1/2 an inch. I remember my dad using "Seal-All" for the fletchings that he made.
This stuff was super strong and was waterproof, not even gas would penetrate it. If you needed to re-fletch after using this adhesive you had to literally cut it off with a carpenters knife. I dont remember ANY of his fletching jobs ever coming apart and when I was a kid I could really put them through the test.

But no pitch to the fletch huh?? I was always led to beleive that
a slight pitch 5-8 degrees was the ticket for true flight broadheads but that was with aluminum, fiberglass or cedar shafts. Like I had said these are my FIRST Carbon shafts. Any other inputs out there??

7mm, I have been fletching this way (STRAIGHT) for about 7 years and it seams to work for me and some others that I've talked to. The glue I use is bond-tite I believe and it holds very well.

Good luck

Thanks again FREEPOP!

I've been looking at getting myself some fletching jigs of my own and have notice that they now have one just for Carbon Shafts.

Do you think that the plain jig for aluminum and wood shafts will work on carbon too, or are the carbon shafts too slender for the proper contact of the fletchings to the shaft??

The Martin I have works fine for any diameter shaft. It does take some adjusting/set-up but isn't difficult. I couldn't tell you anything about any others though, as I have only used this one but can do a half dozen in a night easy, while watching TV.

Hi 7mm......i use a martin fletcher also but i put a slight twist to the right on mine because i want them to spin a little..I think it depends on the broadhead your useing also some work good with a twist and some don't......I was wondering do you have any elk over your way i have a bull hunter for this december hunt and would like to get him a big one and was thinking area x might be the Key this year....If you know any one who would let a guide take hunters on there property i would sure appreciate any help you might give me......thanks Carl

Hello ElkGuide,

Yes, there are Elk out my way, but about 12-15 miles North-East of me in Hillman. Unfortunatly, I have as YET been able to draw sucessfully for an Elk Tag here in Michigan. Not that I haven't tried mind you,....15 years in a row and STILL no luck!!
The DNR have to come up with a BETTER system than is currently in place,... something along the lines of the point system like they have for Bear hunts. I have read articles where people have drawn 2 years in a row  and there was even an article where 2 brothers were drawn for Elk twice I think it was within a 5 year period. That's just not right as far as I'm concerned. If I hear anything regarding your inquiry request amongst the locals
here, I'll get ahold of you or post something here on the board for you.

As far as my arrows go I'm using 115 grain Terminator Bone-crusher tips on a 30" draw length shaft. They fly true enough with
the old original fletchings that I was describing earlier,... but I'm sure they can be improved upon.:D

Burksee,.. WOW I almost missed your post :o Just as it may happen I AM going out this weekend with a couple of friends who are coming up from the Ann Arbor area. The bigger fish have started to come in and they have been hitting really well in between Middle Island and the wreck in about 125-220 ft of water while fishing in the 70-90 ft depth (Downrigging) The average size being caught are in the 18-26lb range on Kings and 8-10lb on lakers. I just heard the local weather forcast for the weekend up here and they are talking RAIN for Saturday and Sunday so bring some rain gear just to be safe.

(Can't hardly trust those weathermen anymore! ;) )
