Frog legs anyone ever try them (wild or store bought) or how about a recipe for them? I got this crazy idea. I was wondering how they would taste smoked.

I've had them in resturants a few times, pretty good. When I've had them they were lightly breaded and pan fried. A real mild white meat.

frog legs rule! I havent had them in a few years but i used to cook at a resturant that served them breaded (breadcrumbs, flour, and corn meal)and panfried in butter, yummy! Ive never had them fresh, only frozen, but are tasty. I wonder how the wild ones taste?:D

Fresh is the only way to go. We walk along the creek and whack em with a plastic wiffle bat, cut the legs off, skin them and fry in flour and butter. I have tried restaurant legs, which are good, but fresh is sooooo much better.
Its quite entertaining your first time out. It only takes about 15 to make a good meal.
Just think how brave that first guy was that discovered that frog legs were tasty to eat. RB1

I've never caught them myself; are they difficult to skin?

As kids we use to use a fishing pole to catch frogs from the ditches around Holly. We tied that little rubber cricket you got with the K-mart tackle box on the end of the line and dangle the cricket over the bank of the ditch. As for skinning the legs it is as easy as taking the pants off a barbie doll (not that I ever wondered.....);) :p

Howdy-
When I was a kid, my Mom's family all lived in a little town called Oak Grove, on a mill pond. A favorite summer activity whenever we were there was to take the BB guns out in a row boat and float around the pond edges popping leopard frogs. We could get several dozen in an hour or two, then we'd skin 'em (whack 'em at the 'waist' with a hatchet, then peel off the 'pants' to the ankles, then another whack along the ankle line.)
Toss into a sizzling skillet with some oil and deep fry right on the bank. Yummy!

"what kind of frogs do you use?"
Whatever kind we could find!
Around the millpond we'd primarily find Leopard frogs, with an occassional bullfrog that was caught unawares. ;)

I thought Leopard frogs were protected??? Maybe I just heard a false rumor.
NOTE: Apparently I was mistaken. I did a search and I find nothing about leopard frogs being protected. The only thing I could find was all about a sharp decline in the late 70's early 80's that had biologist baffled. I gues they are on a slow rebound.
Any way, I love frog legs !! We always used bull frogs. We would gig them, or wack them with a stick. Some times a hook with a bit of worm dangled in front of their faces would entice them to bite. They skin out easy. I have always ate them like pan fish, breaded and fried. Either in a pan or a deep fryer. Fresh is best, but I have bought them frozen by the case at a local butcher store.

I tell you what I am going to take my son and his buddy out one night this year and get a couple dozen, now that you got me thinking about them.!! I think they will have a blast doing it. When does that season open?
I may have to stop at the market and get some on the way home.

When I was a kid we used to use the longest fly rods we could find, with real light leaders and any black small fuzzy fly, dangle that in front of any frog, and WHAM!!!, fun watching them shoot that tongue out, At night we used white flies and illuminated them with flashlights....man it's been bout 40 years since I had a plate of fresh frog legs...Think I'll hit the mill pond in Byron, Maybe try Les's old stomping grounds on my way over there..My 3 year old will love it.

I think the best way to catch them is with a bright light and a gig. They are very easy to skin and they taste great. I have never had them smoked but it sounds good.

Club 37 resturant just north of Baldwin has excellent frog legs. At least they did the last time I was there.
We used to catch BIG bull frogs in the 50s and early 60s with a cane pole and piece of line with any type of fishing fly. Worked everytime. My dad was a big time frog catcher and would travel all over the state to catch a bag full. Back then, me being a kid was freaked out watching him clean them and watch just a pair of legs start twitching with no body attached...........I was leary of eating them back then, little did I know.
Sure wish I had a burlap bag full of them........although I haven't seen what I would say was a true bull frog in years and years.
