Oh man that sounds GOOOOOOD ! I haven't have a potato pancake in a long time. There used to be a place in Shelby Twp. that had THE BEST potato pancakes I've ever had. But sadly, the restaurant changed hands and they don't have them anymore. :(

I've got a recipe that I've used to make them and home and they're good but nowhere near as good as the ones I used to get at Chimes. I'll look for it and pass it on if I can find it.

Now I'm getting HUNGRY. :)

My mother used to make potatoe pancakes but the recepe was lost when she past away.
I found that Perkin's resturants have potatoe pancakes on the menu. Not as good as mom's but they aren't bad.
Another one of my moms german dishes that was out of this world was Lver Dumplings. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it.

there used to be an "ethnic" Hungarian restaurant on Trowbridge, west of Harrison that had great food. Can't remember the name of the place. They had a version of potato pancakes there too.

If you go there...ask the owner for "keeflies" MMMMMMMMMMM

2 eggs 2 tablespoons flour
6 medium potatoes, peeled and shredded
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
Salt and pepper

Mix ingredients, fry.:)

I like to throw a little corn meal in the mix once in a while, hardly authentic, but good. Precooked bacon is good in them, then top the pancakes with eggs sunnyside up for a hearty breakfast.

Don't shred potatoes too finely either.

Oh man, I made a batch of these this morning for Christmas breakfast....
Awesome ! I ended up having what looked like a lot of potatoes so I ended up using three eggs and just a touch of milk to the mix. I shredded the potatoes and then mixed the rest of the ingredients up in a separate bowl and then poured it into the potatoes all at once. I just got my big nonstick frying pan good and hot and added a touch of butter before dropping the "batter" into the pan. They came out GREAT !

Thanks Paul !

Don't shred potatoes too finely either. My Grandma's were the best! I remember as a wee boy her making these, stuffed cabbage and homemade pirogies! Mom told me the secret to her potato pancakes was that she fried them in bacon grease! With the pirogies it was the carmalized in "real butter" onions drizzed on top. My arteries are blocking and hardning just thinkin about these tastey little treats! :corkysm55

My grandma makes the best I have ever had. She tells me it is in how you shred the potatos. She uses a grater that mashes and shreds. She broke one one time and couldn't live without it. It took me months to find the right one. The best restaurant has to be Polina's in Hamtramck. It's about 3 blocks south of Caniff on Jos Campeau on the east side. GO THERE!!

authentic german ones do not have any onion in it. Nor do we use corn meal. No Bacon,,,,, Most of the time this dish is served with Apple sauce in germany:)

otherwise follow the recipe above from esox, its how us germans make it:) matter of fact kids just asked for this morning.....

Sounds about right, but when you fry them, it works best to fry them like you were frying french fries. You want about a half inch of oil in the pan. Start them out in another pan, just to slightly brown them, then cook the rest of the way in the oil bath.

They should drip when they come close to your mouth.

Spread sour cream on top of them, or chili sauce...or just take a good forkfull of kraut then a piece of pancake.

You do all make your own kraut right?

These are SOOOO good!

I make them occasionally but it has been a while but on Thanksgiving morning I was hungry and dinner wasn't being served until about 3:30 so I made up a big batch. They came out awesome! I just use my big electric skillet set to about 375 and melt some butter and put the "batter" in and let them fry for about 5-6 minutes per side and they come out golden brown and YUMMY! Oh by the way, they freeze very well too. ;) That's why I make a big batch. I usually use three jumbo eggs and adjust the amounts accordingly and get the batter the way I like it then I use my food processor to shred the potatoes and they go right from the processor into the egg mixture. When the consistency is about right I start frying. I know they traditional topping is Apple sauce but I usually just use a little sour cream and they're just awesome.

On a cold morning when I don't want to screw around cooking I just pop a couple on a plate and into the microwave for a few minutes and when they're hot they're almost as good as fresh.
