The following appeared on page A8 in the Wednesday, August 20, 2003 Flint Journal as open letter from the papers editorial board:

PUBLIC SHOULD SHOOT DOWN NEW BID FOR DOVE HUNTING

Michigan lawmaker Susan Tabor is back with her quest to legalize dove hunting, having come within one Senate vote of putting it over in 2000.

The chair of the Houst Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Committee introduced the bill last week to designate mourning doves as legal game - an uncalled for change with inhumane ramifications. The harmless birds would become shooting targets for no valid reason, as they do not overpopulate, are not really edible and are not pests to crops.

The tiny, quick-moving prey would often not be retrieved after being shot, so would be left to suffer and orphan their young. What possible pleasure is there in that for recreation, or for that matter for lawmaking?

Atleast 38 states allow these birds to be hunted, but Michigan has a history of resistance dating to the 1980s, when the Natural Resources Commission set a dove season. Some activists sued, and won a court ruling that the NRC had stepped beyond its authority, as it was up to the Legislature to designate which animals were game. This has kept the movement on hold, but Tabor will hold committee hearings in the fall to get a legislative change.

People who oppose needless suffering of innocent creatures, just to add to opportunities to shoot at something, should come out on this one. This unpleasant piece of legislation must be defeated, preferably this time by more than one vote.

WOW!!! Can you believe this anti crap??? Almost brought a tear to my eye feeling sorry for the poor little birdies. LOL!

Prompted me to write my first letter to the editor. Lets get on the bandwagon and nip this in the bud. I have below the address or E-Mail to reply to them.

What a pity the Flint Journal didn't even talk to any of their constituents right there in the great city of Flint, but rather, for lack of research, interest and probably time, took all of the info from this editorial from a simple email that is circulating around the state, made up out of thin air by anti-hunters...if they looked at a website of the MI DNR recently posted on dove FACTS, they would have at least had another point of view, and a scientific one at that...where were these people when it came to basic biology in high school?

That fact sheet can be read at:

http://www.michigandnr.com/publications/pdfs/huntingwildlifehabitat/dove_factsheet.pdf

This "poor little inedible" dove thing is getting old, folks, and they know it, but its the only leg they've got to stand on...it's up to those of uswho have enjoyed dove hunting to educate those hunters out there who won't support dove hunting because they don't know anything about it, and it's up to us to put this type of media where it belongs, in the trash can...get em where they pay attention, folks, in the pocketbook. Write the Flint Journal and let them know you'll be finding your daily news in other types of media from now on...

I just blasted them. I hope everyone else here who reads this does the same. Doesn't seem like they wanted to talk to any hunters before they printed that crap. Maybe some huntes should talk to them. Thanks for the post MIFowlHunter.

The anti's have a strange view of a bird family.."...orphaned their young".

Such a load of crap to tug at the emotions. They might as well say something as absurd as , " because some mean hunter will cruelly orphan baby doves many will grow up to be criminals.."

I have written my Reps, I hope you all take the time to do it, too.

I like how no one was cited as the author of this pile of *****. I emailed my disagreement with the article to the Journal.

I just got off the phone with the Flint Journal Editor that wrote that piece! He doesn't think we should hunt the "pretty little song bird". Yet he says hes not against hunting! He also said just because theres alot of them doesn't mean we need to hunt them, so I asked him straight up - In your opinion, what determining factor should we look at to decide if a animal should/can be hunted? He said " I haven't thought that far ahead on hunting"
He was a "deer caught in the headlights" on that one.
He agreed that hunters won't reduce the population, he agreed that hunters will bring in Millions to help dove habitat, but he just didn't think we needed to shoot a "song bird".
He said the journal doesn't require him to post his name.

Must be nice to be able to write a article everyday for thousands to read and yet keep your name out of it!

Please, contact all your local papers and voice your concerns! From talking with him, he said it looks like we "might" get our season this time around. So don't let up on the letters and calls!

I think the Flint Journal is notorious for being flaky on outdoor / natural resource issues......I should walk across the street to their building and start giving my opinion right now. Man this one is really burning in my head.....I would like to formulate a rebuttle but I am too frustrated.

I got word that the bias anti-hunting MLive Grand Rapids Press forum is activly deleating all pro dove hunting posts from thier public forum. Note: This is the same Booth newschain that Bob Gwizdz and Howard Myerson work for. It is too bad they have to work for the anti-hunting press as their employers.

This is just one example of the deleted posts.

OUTDOORS: Dove hunting deserves a shot

Here are some straight answers to common lies and exaggerations from anti-hunting propagandists.

http://www.freep.com/sports/outdoors/eric21_20030821.htm

YOUR help is URGENTLY needed, many NEW legislators need to be educated about the hotly contested dove issue...

Call, write, fax, or email your State Representative and State Senator TODAY. Urge them to SUPPORT HB 5029. Make it clear you want recreational hunting "management" used on this game bird and you do not want your right to hunt dictated by anti-hunting extreamist and propagandists.

Call the House at 517-373-0135 and ask to be connected with your Representative. You may also find your Representative http://www.house.state.mi.us/LocateRep.asp

Call the Senate at 517-373-2400 and ask to be connected with your Senator. You may also find your Senator http://www.senate.state.mi.us/SenatorInfo/find-your-senator.htm

THANK YOU FOR HELPING TO SAVE THE RIGHT TO HUNT GAME BIRDS AS HUNTED IN 39 OTHER STATES.
