To me the doves and pigeons look a lot the same. How do you tell the difference?

doves are about 50% smaller than pigeons, have a pointed tail (pigeons have a squared off tail), and faster wing beats. The also tend to have a more "direct" flight pattern than pigeons do.
It is not all that difficult to tell what a dove looks like in flight. I assume that we are all out in the field enjoying nature a lot this time of year. Well, when you are out there, keep an eye open for doves. There are especially noticable around grain fields this time of year.
To mistake a pigeon for a dove is like mistaking a coot for a mallard, an elk for a whitetail, a king salmon for a brook trout. It is simply not difficult to ID these birds.
