I'm looking for some current info on Indian Lake. My son and I are staying at Indian Lake State Park south and would like to get into some perch and walleye action. I've never fished Indian before, so I'm hoping to get as much info as possible.
In turn I'll help out anyone who is venturing into SE Michigan and needs info on any of my regular stops (Detroit River, Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair).
Thanks in advance!

i haven't been there this year, but will try to help....there is a reed bed just to the north of the state park(south) the outer edge of this area has a great shelf/drop it produces well for either species under the right conditions..it is a large lake with sparse vegetation so a graph is certainly an aid to find structure that does exist.....the western shoreline on the southern end of the lake also can be productive. I never had much luck in the northern half of the lake. Assuming, the waters u fish here, u have a substanial boat...this lady can get rough! it also has lots of bars and shallows that can be a hazard to deep setting motors and watercraft. I would appreciate, when u return, a report on any cormorant problem they may be experiencing...good luck! great fishing!

I'll second that about the lake getting rough. My brother and I were on it in my canoe about 10 years ago and the winds picked up enough to form whitecaps. As we paddled back to the state park, a couple of people were watching us in mild disbelief from the shoreline; my brother turned to me and said, "Act like we do this all the time."
That was good for a laugh at the moment but it was all we could do to stay upright for the trip in.

Just a a report on our trip. The mayfly hatch was in full swing on Indian Lake, so, fishing was less than stellar, w/ a few small perch for our efforts. However, in all fairness to the lake, we put most of our time in on Big Bay De Noc. It the smallies by Nahima and the salmon off of Fairport. We went 3 for 3 on Sat evening, 1 king and 2 Atlantics (the commorants were thick at fairport on Sat evening). Picked up 1 more Atlantic on Sunday afternoon.
The Indian Lake South State Park was real good, kinda open and packed in, but great for the kids. Big Spring was awesome, as was the Thompson Fish Hatchery!
Thanks for all the info, we had a great time.

Im curious about the Fairport fishing, any size to those kings or atlantics? How deep? spoons or flycatcher squid combos? I always go to big bay denoc on labor day weekend. But have been told in the past that the salmon had moved out of there by then, so I fish walleye and bass.

BignoccursG,
There are 2 launches in Fairport. They had mentioned that they were picking up fish there, so, we went out twice. Once launched, you run due south, between the end of the Garden penensula (on your left) and a group of islands (on your right). Once you get even w/ the second island, you'll start dropping off. We started at 100' fow, fishing varied depths w/ spoons and hoochi mama's/flies. The Atlantics were on the smaller size, 2-4 lbs. The King was about 14 lbs. I remember catching 1 Atlantic on a Michael Jackson and another on a Green Dolphin. The first day there were approx 75 boats, the sewcond only a few.
Not sure if they will still be in the area come Labor Day or not.
Good Luck!
