Elk Lake

I have a buddy coming up to Elk Lake near traverse city. He has never been to this lake and neither have I. Was wondering...what type of fish are in here? He would like to fish for smallmouth if possible. any thing to look for or use??? Any suggestions about fishing this lake at all would be greatly appreciated.

In my expierence, Elk has some Smallie fishing along the shoreline, but is mainly a Salmonid fishery. Head over into L Skegemog, it is a great Smallie fishery, and there are Muskie and Pike there too. The point on the north side where the two lakes join is a great place to fish, there is a good current going through there and the predators will be in the area.
