Second best bet is the Foote Dam or the Pier. I think everyone should fish there all the time!!! It is the place to be!! that is were I would fish if I were you Stelmon!!!

I don't know many people that will truthfully answer that . River space is limited these days.
I pretty much grew up on the Main Stream.

I like fishing the area between Eagle Island and the Claybanks.

You should have added one more, "none of the above".
By now I think most of the guys know where my favorites are. I know shoeman does anyways!
Oh and by the way, to anyone using the launch at river road, its in bad shape! Theres a big hole right were your tires set. Got my truck stuck there mon:( Its alot better now since I dug most of the snow away but I don't think I'd recamend using it, unless you bring some gravel to fill it in.

I like to fish between Grayling and Oscoda

Depends on time of year, whats biting, and what I'm using...

I guess I'm going to agree with Ladykiller! The Shoe rules(Betcha can't figure out where that is!) I would say that my favorite spot is between the Dam and the Pier for Steelhead. There is a particular hole that I like the best in that area, Look through my picture page and maybe you can figure out where it is(I think Erik or Shoeman might know where it is)
Stelmon the question you should have asked is where is your least favorite spot! In that case I would say the High Banks is the worst . I've only fished at the Dam a couple of times so I wouldn't consider it one of my spots!

Definitely the North Pier.. Quite a mixed bag... Whitefish, Menominee, Steelhead, Walleye, Burbot, YOu name it!!!

What do you use to catch burbots? Just curious, I wont be invading your honey hole I promise! I'm a chiken ***** when it comes to the north peir. I let my friend talk me into going out there once. It was really windy that day/eve, and after getting out there I didn't want to come back. the waves were crashing over the wall and all I could think about the whole time we fished was, we have to walk that wall to get back to shore. I have alot of respect for the water, I really would rather die some other way than drowning! Know what I mean?

Usually dead smelt on the bottom when I'm purposely fishing for them. Also caught them on Crankbaits and spoons before. Even waxworms meant for Whitefish!!! Sideshow- We'll be out there after the ice is out on the bay. Right now too busy/addicted to those hawg 'eyes...

Yeah as far as the piers go, you can't beat the north pier, it's the best for steelhead, walleyes, and kings, it is dangerous, if you don't know what you are doing, but if you do, then you already know how good it is:D ! And it is a long walk, especially with a limit of 15lb kings!

Wow, this poll is OLD. Funny how time change. My fav. spot use to be a "secret" place where we fish. Now, it is def. the peirs. A_S, your going to have to teach me how to fish this north peir;)

Guess I would have to say starting in Grayling down to the big water below mio. This includes south and north branch like others, depends on what is hatching and what kind of rod I want to fish that day.

I like fishing at the Damn, but i got on the other side of the river. I like the drift a lot better. The scholls are a lot easier to be reached.

Yes, the "BIG A" is getting more crowded. In my lifetime, i've
seen the expansion of people enjoying this gem we're sooo
lucky to have.

My favorite times are not at a particular spot, its rather a time of
year that i enjoy her most.

Winter weeds out many people that won't go out in the cold.
The eagle still soars high, the swans still search for
food in the faster open water, the coyote uses the the ice as a bridge to expand his range.....etc. etc.

-Back to fishing now.
The biggest 'eyes i've seen her give up have been on the backwaters thru the ice. Icefishing is my passion and the
frozen Au Sable is my playground.

The North Pier at the Au Sable may be hazerdous to your health but with the fishing that it offers; who cares. Being that close to death while hooking so many fish by that pier makes me feel more alive.

The Highbanks, Foote dam, the piers, and another lesser known spot win. I like it when everyone goes to those places, and they certainly do hold fish. There are no secret spots, but I have a list of about 4 "secret spots," that even guides pass by most of the time. They are usually good for a fish or two.

The whole river is awesome when there are fish. I especially like all the trees that you have to steer the fish around to land them. All those square ended logs are from the logging era - about 100 years ago. Amazing that they are still here. Heavy line gives you more of a chance to land them in the wood.

Every fish that gets to the dam had to pass through the pier heads to get there; and a lot of them get caught along the way.

My favorite place is Alcona Pond just west of glennie :) Have fished there with family members the last 30 years on and off, used to have seasonal lot on lake. Some of the fish our family has caught or have seen caught: 12" bluegill, 5lb. brown, 22lb. pike, 12lb. walleye, 17" crappie, and alot of large rough fish like sucker and bowfin(dogfish). There's alot of big fish in that lake, but not alot of numbers. But where else can u have such a fishery, and camp right on the lake for $10.00 a night!! Its awesome. Even has an eagle's nest at south end of lake and have watched the eagles catch more than use on many a day :(

N. Pike and Essox, where's some good places on loud? Never have fished that backwater.

Your right secondgear about it not being Sylvan and close to the location, it's up river from Mio. I do all my fishing around the Parmallee bridge and that is where my cabin is. I figure that if I spend half my weekend there it qualifies as home sweet home.

Yep your right Rick. I'd trade you a place to stay for the super bowl Houston 2/01/04 ( One hour away) to come and fish there. For some prime bass or/ crappie/ catfish. any takers? I would'nt mind to do a trade out of fishin here for fishin there?

The burbot and dogfish are totally different fish. I have eaten burbot from the caseville area and Tawas and I can tell you these are as delicious as any fish i've eaten. Their known as freshwater cod. Little tricky to fillet, get 4 pieces of meat, each side of tail, and 2 what i call back straps. Not much from ribs to belly but skin.

One is a burbot, that spends most of its time in deeper water:

http://www.seagrant.wisc.edu/greatlakesfish/burbot.html

The other (dogfish) is a Bowfin, found in shalliow bays etc.:

Oops, sorry for the mis-info guys.

I know I've seen both dogfish and burbot and thinking about it, yeah, the dogfish were in foot deep water and the burbot were all deep. My bad.

All depends on what you are looking for. I tend to stay in the deeper water within a half mile of the dam.

I wouldnt tell you and I always catch my limit or more in the ausable steelhead is my fish I live for them have dreams of catching them with my 10 1/2 foot rod 4 lb test and a perfect drift with either spawn or waxie never a bobber.but there are alot better holes then you mentioned here are a few meat holes, bung hole, harvey hole, upper&lower hairpins, highbanks witch suck only good in april whrile pool, beaver flats, gilberts hole, upper middle& lower sand buck point, leaning tree, three pipes, thorn hole train tresle, devils elbow, clay banks,23 bridge to mouth, and all pockets in between problem is finding them they are all great river is huge lots of room just like all other main rivers across the state there are fish in them all just get the drift right with right weight depending on witch hole your be in I can only say this is the river i learned to catch steelhead on and every river is fished differnt good luck.

for two bucks you can buy a map with all the holes that are comely fished called out.... I have to look but almost every hole that is more than 6ft deep is called out plus alot of the gravel beds....I have found out that 10 percent of the guys catch 90 percent of the fish... especially fishing that river.... I look at the Ausable like LSC.. it ain't no secert from the dam to the mouth but from the dam to grayling that is another story... if you are really curious on the lay of the river you can buy a topo map of the river.... that is what I use when fishing a new river or lake... last year three pipes and the meat hole paid of big but this is a new year... we will know very soon the new hot holes.... good luck...
