Just wondering if anyone has heard of the effort towards Michigan moose population......

No. I haven't heard as much about the moose as I have the elk. Hopefully they are putting equal time and money into both species. The more we can hunt hear close to home the better. Hopefully someone will come back with some updated info. Good question I hope to hear some good answers.:)

All I have heard is that they thought we should have several hundred. So they did a arieal survey and couldnt find many at all. I was shocked that our DNR was mistaken.

If you use the dead moose in the back of the truck method of population estimation, then there are zero moose in Michigan.

If you use pellet count method, then there must be thousands of those moose in Baraga County alone, because I sure see a lot of moose poop up there.

I guess you need to decide which method is most biologically (or economically) sound.

Okay, on the serious side. Try this: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10370_12143_12185-30966--,00.html

It appears that the 1000 moose by year 2000 goal was not reached.

There are a few pockets of reproducing moose but the prospects of a hunting season are unlikely. Brainworm limits the growth of the herd into areas with a higher population of deer.
