I thaught I heard on the Bob Bauer radio show on Saturday morning that some sort of ruling/decision is going to be made this week whether to continue the ban on the meat of ruminants. Be curious to see if that is the case and if anything changes.

My buddies are going on a caribou hunt in Sept. We verified that they are NOT allowing caribou meat into the US. They also said that the rules change daily.

I heard from a very reliable source that they are going to make an announcement in the next couple of days that they are going to lift the ban on all animals........

Will do.....

I don't like spreading uncomformed news, but I thought if some of our members were going to cancel their hunts, maybe they might want to hold off a few days.

Hi,
We've created this webpage to help keep track of the importation regs. The new USDA reg Holzy refers to is on this site.
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,...73145--,00.html
We are in the process of clarifying exactly what parts can be imported from Canada.
Thanks

USDA Lifts Ban on Importation of Hunted Meat from Canada
Sportsmen received some highly anticipated news on August 8 when Secretary of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Ann Veneman, announced that the USDA will allow the importation of hunter-harvested wild ruminant meat from Canada. The importation of ruminant products was banned on May 20, 2003, when a case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalophy (BSE), or "mad cow disease" was found in a cow in Alberta. The Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation has been working closely with Administration and USDA officials as well as its partners in the sportsmen's community to lift the ban for wild ruminants so that hunters would be able to bring their meat back to the US.

In July the USDA published a memo informing sportsmen that they could bring up to two sets of harvested and cleaned antlers, skull, plate, hide and cape back with them, but still prohibited the importation of any meat. This created an ethical dilemma for hunters headed for Canada, as most hunters believe that they should utilize as much of their harvested animal as possible. Furthermore, the CSF and others argued that there is no scientific evidence that BSE is readily transmissible to wild ruminants in urging for the exclusion of game meat.

"Friday's announcement is most welcome, especially for hunters that are embarking for Canada right now for early season caribou hunts," commented CSF's Director of Policy, Jeff Crane. "Secretary Veneman and the USDA need to be congratulated for reaching a compromise to accommodate hunters just in the nick of time.":

Hunters can immediately begin bringing wild ruminant meat products intended for their personal use into the United States, but will need a "Veterinary Services Special Permit for the Importation of Hunter-Harvested Wild Ruminant Meat," along with one of the following: a valid Canadian export certificate for game meat, or a copy of a valid hunting license or a valid hunting tag. The permit can be downloaded from http://www.aphis.usda.gov/lpa/issues/bse/bse.html or obtained by calling the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service National Center for Import and Export at (301) 734-3277.
