I was out a couple of weeks ago and was checked by the DNR. This guy seemed determined to find something, and proceeded to make us write our names and addresses on our tip-ups. I don't have my guide handy, but don't recall having ever read anything like this before. He said any tip-up that was in the water must be marked.

Is this for real, or was he just harrassing us? If you know, please post, and as always, FISH ON!!!

He wasn't harrassing you. It is in the fishing guide. I don't remember the page, but it's towards the front of the book.

Name and address on tip ups has been law for more than 20 years. If you look at the Fishing Digest on page 8 under the heading Hook and Line Fishing you will see, "Tip-ups and similar devices used for ice fishing must show the angler's name and address".

I don't understand why you think the officer was harassing you just because he was doing his job and checking everything? Officers are in a no win situation with some, when they check everything they are harassing people, when they talk to a person and don't check everything, then people call them lazy.

The reason for name and address on tip-ups is because many times there are people that use more than two tip-ups, the maximum allowed by law. A tip-up cost a few dollars, lot less than a fine for two many lines. Some think if their name and address is not on the tip-up then the officer can't write them a ticket for having those 4, 7, or 10 tip-ups out there. Sometimes they can't so they seize the tip-ups. Most of the time they have watched pior to checking the angler, who is tending those tip-ups and then they get a ticket for too many lines and no name. Obviously from your post, you are not one of those anglers or you probably would have received a ticket for no name. From your post, all you received was a warning and made to put your name on the tip-ups.

Thanks Boehr,

I really didn't know the law existed, and only asked the question about harassment because he went so far as to measure a pike that was obviously in excess of 30 inches long (22 being legal of course), and the fact that I've been checked several times before and the tip-ups where never mentioned.

Thanks for the info and I will continue to advocate legal and ethical sporting everywhere I go.

As far as measuring the fish, have you ever asked a CO, whats the biggest fish you seen caught today? If you haven't OK, but I have been asked that and other questions tons of times. Also, don't know where you fishing but 24" is the legal size for pike, not 22".

As long as there is a name on the tip-ups and there is enough people with licenses to cover all the lines with no more than two lines per each fishermen, you will not have a problem.
