OK....while salmon fishing last year I saw this family casting torpedoes into my pod of fish. But when i told them what they were doing they said they are practicing catch and release. Sure enough they were catching and releasing. Is this legal. they werent ripping and jerking which i thought was wierd. They just wanted the fight out of them. I ended up meeting them up at the foote a day later and they were doing the same thing. They even caught a huge and i mean huge king and they release it. Boehr, is this right. legal. what.

As long as they are not snagging or attempting to snag, which you stated they were not jerking or anything, catch and release is a very legal and preffered method of fishing by some.

but they were getting all the salmon by the side. Is it still legal.

If they are not intentionally attempting to snag the fish and are using legal lures, I'm guessing by torpedo you are talking about a cylidical weight, probably about the size of your baby finger with trble hooks attached in the same manner as a raapala. If that's what they are using and not jerking and not keeping the fish, yes it's legal, maybe unethical if they are taking that many fish, but legal.

Is there away the torpedoes could be made illegal, so the snagger's can't use them.

Not without including a lot of legal lures with them. The best is peer pressure and reporting the people snagging.
