Because the regulation book is a bit fuzzy on this, I will ask it here: What is needed to transport a handgun in a vehicle? The book says that a valid hunting license would cover it, but what about during non- hunting season. I often transport my handguns to my hunting properties for target shooting, etc. at all times of the year, and I seldom have a hunting license with me. I cannot believe that a resticted CCW is needed for this kind of transport. The book also mentions "club membership". Taken literally as mentioned, a Sam's Club membership, North American Hunting Club membership, or a health club membership would suffice. A related question: How can guns be legally transported in a pickup truck with open bed?

Ken, you may want to wait for Boehr's reponse for complete accuracy but this is how I understand it. In a pickup it has to be in a case(I beleive locked)as far away from the driver as possible and obviously unloaded. Not under the drivers seat or in the glovebox. That actually applies to any vechicle w/o a trunk, if it has a trunk it has to go in there. As far as the law about transporting, I think in theory unless you are going hunting (w/ a license on your person)or to a recognized target range or a shooting club you belong to it is technically illegal to transort. The law is vey vague and I try to cover all my bases by always having a small game license w/ me. That only leaves me open for a couple of months a year. That's why this new law is so important. If you can get a general carry permit easily statewide you wouldn't have to worry about how someone interpets the law.

Nailer did answer the question correctly. I will add, that unless you are just driving around in an area frequented by wild game or actually going hunting with it, don't worry about having or not having a hunting license. Whenever you transport a handgun, unless you have a general CCW permit, carry it unloaded in a locked box inaccessible to the occupants of the vehicle. The box doesn't have to be anything fancy, a cheap tin box from Wal-mart that you could unlock with a straight pin is fine. Many cloth cases you can lock the zipper to one end although I do not recommend a soft case unless you use a trigger lock too for transporting unless you can put it in the truck, not good for a pickup unless you have a topper with nobody riding in the back.

A CCW for hunting & target will not help you for transporting because while transporting your CCW has no bearing. Attorney General ruling, you can't hunt from a motor vehicle so you must transport a gun just like you don't have a CCW. General is a different story.

The is also a bill in the legislature to do away with the hunting license part although I have never heard of anyone going to their camp, whatever in the summer without a license getting into trouble. Only when they are walking around the woods (area frequented by wild game) and do not have a license.
