I have a cabin in the Hesperia area. It is on a private lake with about 20 other property owners and no public access. There has never been any stocking by the DNR that I have been able to find. My question is that several of the property owners are thinking of installing some fish habitat. The lake contains a very healthy population of largemouth bass, but small bluegills crappie and perch. There are a few pike in the lake. We were thinking of placing x-mas trees on the ice with cinder blocks and allow them to sink to the bottom at ice out. The weed line is to 12’ deep but the rest of the lake is featureless silt bottom. The lake has no drop offs and is a large soup bowl. Does the DNR allow this type of activity? Is there another preferred method that would be better than the pine trees or brush piles? And lastly, do we need a permit to do this.

That is a question that I can not answer for sure. I would recommend checking with Fish Division of the DNR and Land & Water Management of the DEQ.

Rich O'Neal is your local fish biologist. He just recently got his own office at the Muskegon State Game Area on Messenger Road off Maple Island Road. 1-231-788-5055
