I've heard that you have to be within a certain required distance from tip ups...I once saw something in a ON PATROL article in Michigan Out Doors magazine that stated a fisherman was cited for being too far from his tip up....can anyone tell me if there is a legal distance limit, and what is it?...Thanks

There is no minimum required distance from your tip up that you have to be. The law states that your lines must be under immediate control. That means that if your tip up goes off, you must be able to observe and tend to it. If you can's see your tip up, you can't observe it and tend to it.

It most cases, if an officer observes a tip up with nobody around, especially if no name and address is on the tip up, they will likely set it off and see how long it takes for someone to tend to it.
