I haven't done it since I was a kid, but I think we used a section of 10lb line that was as long as the rod. Tie it to the loop on the end of the rod and wrap it around the end until the line winds up to a length that works best for you.
Worms on a hook with or without a bobber.

No, just set your line out and wait for the bite. Cane poles are for still fishing, although I'm sure you could jig with them.

I grew up using 16' and 20' cane poles.
I still love using them. They are the panfish pole of choice. Every try and pull a bull gill out of matted weeds with an ultralight? With the cane, you can pull straight up. I used to use crickets or worms under a bobber.

Use a length of line around one foot shorter than the pole length. Use a 6"test and sometimes even a blood knot to make it go down to 4# or 2# if the fish are line shy. You can drift it, jig it or still fish it. If you want to do it the old way, use a cork float instead of a bobber.
This method of fishing has caught more fish than all of the fly fishing in history. Enjoy...
