View Full Version : Tired of the Dumb ones

Have I ever been getting humbled this year. This is really my first year on my own fishing for walleye's. I used to fish Saginaw Bay with the old man and we would do pretty good, but this erie thing is got my head hanging...(as much as it can for a guy that is out fishing every weekend)Got the new boat last year and got it rigged, but so far each time out only 2-3 in the box, thank the fish gods there are a few dumb ones we can fool into biting.
I admit I never have done the bottom bouncer thing until this year and we finally caught out first eye on one this morning. First I wasn't putting enough line out, today I guess we need to be under power to get the proper blade action..I sure thought the waves were strong enough just to drift.
I also picked one up on a reef runner... a first
One problem I know of is getting the boat slowed down. Normally it runs around 2.8 but we put out drift sock and that slowed us down to 2.1 running with the waves..I never check going against.
Other methods I have tried are a mini dipsy with a spoon and that has yet to produce, also ran a harness with clip on weights and that struck out..we always get at least one on a tot, but I think we should be doing a lot better.
Any tips (except try golf) will be appreciated.

Troll cranks off the boards, spoons and harnesses off the cannonballs, and don't fish the pack. Fish the outside of the pack. Storm lures due well in Erie, wiggle warts, hot'ntots, thundersticks. Wallydivers catch fish. Get an Ohio licence and go deep.

I think first of all keep it simple, don't try and out think a fish, try thinking like a fish:D I just made that up as I was sitting here, sorry....lol Most of all don't hang your head, Erie has been known to be a little tuff on some of us at times, so no big deal.
My dad told me this one a few years back and it took me a while to figure it out,
Don't fish where there ain't no fish?????? Now remember it's hard to mark fish in the shallows of erie so look for bait fish on your graph and then start fishing, most of the time where there is bait fish schooling up there will be walleye, this holds true for me on Erie most of the time.
If your trolling cranks keep it simple, same style on your lines,ie tot's, warts, work the water column until you find a pattern. One lure back 75 ft. or so one 80' then 85 very the lengths back up to 130 see what the fish want and go from there.
I also agree with moonlighting stay out of the packs, work the perimeter, or find you own fish. Just cuz there's a crap load of boats fishing one spot doesn't mean that they are sitting on fish. Well enough of this psycho bull poop, Shot me a pm, I'd be happy to take you out and see what what we can do out there and maybe you could put somethings to work in your rig. By all means get an Ohio liscense.

be versable, have more then one weapon available, if drifting is not working ,try trolling if cranks arn't working go to spoons saturday on erie I could not buy a walleye drifting, switched to spoons, and had a great day( for details check another thread)I agree with moonlighting and eyebuster stay out of the packs.keep it simple and that will keep it fun.

All very good tips posted on this. I think another tip to mention is your boat speed. I think you're going WAY to fast! I believe the boat speed is one of the MOST overlooked aspects of fishing lake Erie. As far as fishing the "pack", I kinda disagree. I figure, they're not all out there for NO reason. A pack of boats with all those lures in the water, " can" look like a HUGE school of bait fish, to those walleyes. I believe if you "slow down" with those minidipsys and spoons, you should do all right.

Thats funny, still laughing, I will tell Art, Well another day on Erie today MON, Grass and May flys were bad, tried trolling with boards, fly's and weeds had to be pulled every 5 minutes or so, Put on some divers I have, they still caught them straight down from the boat, finanly tried to drift, caught 2 perch and a head 20 inchs, tried crawlers, spoons and hot & tots, I give up, tried kicking the engine in and out, today was bad with the weeds and fly's, can't believe that those may flys and ball up on your line like they do and lures, fished from 8:30 am till 11;30, got tired of pulling grass and flys off the line and we quit
