I just wanted to put my 02 cents in on a spotter matter. I posted earlier this week that I was looking for a spooter and to see if anyone could make a suggestion. I didnt get any so when I got up to greyling on friday i called the fly factory. they suggested I use a guy named tom shook. I called tom and told him that I was looking for a spotter to move my car and I would like a day trip. he suggested that I go from wakely to parmalee bridge. being that I had never floated the au sable i went with his suggestion.

leaving the launch at 830, we were fishing for about an hour when we found a school of whitefish and we fished to them for about an hour with no results. shortly after that we got bombarded with canoes. Now im not complaining about them too much as they were cute girls who were offering us beer but our spotter told us that we would see no more than 6 canoes all day. we went through about 25 of them. this group put in at wakely and went down to mcMasters.

to end the trip, we reached mcMasters at about 6pm. the spotter told us that we would be finished with our float at 430. we knew that we still had a while to go to get to parmalee.
to make a long story short, we didnt get to the landing until 11pm. we didnt expect to have to find a boat launch in the dark nor be navigating our boat then as we were told the trip would be until 430.

all of this for only 50 dollars.

point being, I doubt I will be using fly factory for some time as they are the ones who gave the spotter high recommendations.

I thought spotters just spotted cars. I've never relied on them
for much more than that. Was that $50.00 just for spotting and
his "advice".

Next time email Rusty Gates for a spotter recommendation. I went towards the end of May and got a spot for less than half of that. Don't expect a spotter to give you fishing advice or float times. That's up to you. I can take what would be a 30 float by canoe and streach it into an all day trip :)

School of whitefish??????? Suckers!!!!!!

Wakely to Parmalee is a 7 hour trip without fishing, depending on how fast you fish, stop to fish, lunch, etc... but most of the time a serious fisherman will double the float time...yep you should have ended up at Parmalee around 10 pm(you must have took your time fishing in a few places!!!!). Lesson learned. Nobody can predict how many canoes you might see, cause you never know when a livery has a large group to send, etc.. Need to do your homework a little more, I would have told ya to watch the waterfall right before Parmalee, just to see your reaction :D . Us locals like downstate canoe greenhorns!!!!!!! WATERFALL AHEAD STAY TO THE RIGHT!!!!

I know that this does amuse you but the spotter told me that he has fished the section before. I am fully aware of the time added by having a drift boat and fishing along the way. I tried to do some "homework" earlier this week to find recommendations. the spotter did say that most of the canoes would be upstream from where we were. I had never fished the au sable from my boat before so I didnt really know what to expect nor believe. yep 50 bucks. not to mention the girls didnt get naked once that I saw.

I dont understand the whole waterfall bit but maybe thats because I couldnt see much.

and as far as the whole whitefish thing, the spotter also said that there were menominee in the river. I could absolutely be wrong about it.
