Fished Erie Saturday evning with my two boys.set up drifting north west sister in 31 'we could not buy a walleye drifting, seen other boats around us catching a few. After a swim break we started to troll.we picked up 17 walleye,15 came on spoons.we headed convinced we had caught our 3 man limet ,bbut no matter how many times we counted, when we got home there were just 17 fish.we had another great day on erie.

good job larry. It's hard to count fish in the live well when the numbers get that high. Spoons!!!!! Thats about the only thing i did not try:confused: I got 4 eyes and about 100 sheephead sat, I tryed drifting, troling tots, bb's with crawlers. Just about every thing, but could not get anything going. what was your speed/lineout ?

suckerbass,
ran only 3 lines due to the fact my crew,s age was only 5 and 10,although I fished to the north of pack with a 10 yr. at the helm while I'm setting lines I kept it simple.ran two off the rigggers,100 feet back, had one set at 27 and the other at 21.The thrid rod I ran way back down the middle on a three way rig with a crank and a spoon.the best speed seemed to around 2.5 we slowed down a couble times, and caught some monster sheephead, running faster then 2.3 seemed to keep the sheephead away.

thanks larry,
looks like i was a little slow, I did speed up to aroud 2.5 but i think i was a little high in the watter at the time (75-100 back with tots on bords). Question on speed, if i look at my gps it will say 2.5 yet my depth finder will say 1.7 or so? Not only that but my speed seems to jump around on both +/- .3mph I'm going to try and go out again tues or wed. every time i try to use my riggers for walleye i end up with a little one on that i drag aroud the lake for an hour or so but thats better than not catching them. thanks for the advice.

sucerbass,
that was gps speed mine varies up and done a little too,2.5 was average.with riggers i use real light releases and barely put the line in,all but a couple fish released,I try to check the lines evry 10 minutes or so not drag them around I've caught many fish both walleye and salmon by poping the and letting the lure flutter up.

I've caught many fish both walleye and salmon by poping the and letting the lure flutter up. ;) i second that one.
i have not tried riggers for walleye yet. what type, size, of spoon do you run? i think i have heard people say mini streaks. lucky boys you have. and lucky you to have a driver. i have adults on my boat that cant keep us out of trouble while i am setting lines. pb.:D

Nice job Larry....Were you directly north of West Sister? I fished yesterday out of Bolles but had to stay in Michigan waters as the guys I took out were too cheap.....errr...didn't want to invest in an Ohio license. I was frustrated as I figured the water was much cleaner out there. I got nothing on the troll (LOTS of weeds) with spoons/dipsies so after a couple of hours we switched to drifting. Picked up 7 in a couple of hours on erie dearies. I'm going out tomorrow and would love to get the trolling program going. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.....Rick

Great Job on the fish GF Larry and crew, you youngins have got to know that if you want to get a good count on your fish you'll have to do it yourself and don't let dad do it....;) I was out in the same area today and couldn't get anything going while drifting, switched to deep little rippers at about 11am or so and did great until we had to leave for the weigh in. I gave the details in another thread (West Sister Island) Once again great job guys....

polarbear,
I was useing 3 different spoon brands, they all caught fish,I had a candy corn ministreak on the three way long lined . on the riggers had a froggy fishlander(same size as mini streak) on one, a copper stinger spoon on the other.
rickyp,
I was north of west sister maybe 4 to 5 miles, unless the fish have moved should be easy to find it seemed like evry charter in the area was out there.what time are you heading out tomorrow,I'll be down there 4 to 4:30,I can scoll down the gps and give you #'s unless theres to much chatter i'll montier 68.Ricky the first trip out of erie evry year I get a ohio license for 23 bucks,It opens alot more fishin ground.you don't want to mess with the ohio dnr.

Thanks for the info Larry....I should be on the water by 3:30 or so. I always have my ohio license too, but sometimes people I take out don't want to buy one. I don't think I'll give them a choice anymore. Taking my 19 year old son and a buddy of his. Started him young and he still likes to fish with the old man....I'm glad for that. Give me a shout on 68...my boat name is creating memories (wife got to name the boat)....it's a white and green 24ft sea ray sundancer. Don't have a gps yet...saving the bucks for the 182c garmin....so the numbers really won't help...but I know the area you were fishing. Thanks again for the info.
