I know this topic has come up several times since the Storm change over to plastic lipped hot n tots....
....i tapped mine on a rock this week and up floats my hot n tot body!!! uuurrrrgggghhhh:mad:  everyone of my friends and my brother have all broke a few.....
what in the world...what if you had a monster on and off he goes and in comes just the lip off your hot n tot....I think they should change back over....
do they still make the metal lipped ones?
wow...this dosnt make me happy.....
just thought i would vent....
was it the cost of the metal lip that caused the change?
its a good thing that i got it at Gander Mountain...they let us bring them back and get a new one....thats one good thing about Gander Mountain...

This are the lures David storm is making. He is the originator of the Hot-N-Tot

Have you tried the Double Downer by Producer? I believe that they are the same as the old Hot-n-Tots. They are usually around $2.99 each. I've seen them at various tackle shops.

Here is another version. Catain Jay bought some in bulk and sold some to me. I haven't used mine yet but I think he has been doing good with them.

Basically they are hot-n-tots. Just a different name. There made by the hot-n-tot man. I have a couple and i catch just as many fish on them

The Storm company was bought out completely a year or so back by Normark, which owns Rapala. They then proceded to be idiots and change the hotntot over to a plastic lip, thus dooming it sales. As was pointed out, however, there suddenly are knock-offs based on the old tot that are on the market alot thicker than they used to be, like the double downers. Good baits, good price, METAL lips.

I have used the double downers this year on Erie and inland lakes. They run great, I haven't had to tune one yet. They also catch fish!

new tots = broken lips, paint that rubs off very easy, and more or less a different action then the old tots.
Even though hot n tots are not the first choice in my tackle box to use, i do have some of the old ones and HAD some new ones. The new ones are laying somewhere in one of my old tackle boxes that are no longer used.
Bottom line is the news ones are junk, Normark took a legendary lure and turned it into the biggest blunder in fishing tackle history.

Double Downers work for me. Just change the hooks and you're ready to rock.

I've been using the Double Downers on Erie this whole season and have been doing great on them. I haven't had to tune one yet, and I did just fine with the hooks that are on them. I know alot of guys change the hooks, and the front clip, but like I said, I haven't had a problem with the just the way they came.

I know of a place that still has quite a nice stock of the metal lipped Hot-n-tots.
They're selling at a bit of a premium, but still very reasonable. Right around $5 shipped for the 3.75oz ones.
PM me if you want the link. I asked Steve and he said he'd rather I not post it publically.

The liquor store around the corner from me has them in both sizes.
He's charging darn near $6 for the big ones. At least his crawlers are at a decent price.

jeremy L ,
I'm not sure which was the biggest blunder in fishing tackle history , " improving " the hot-n-tot , or " improving " the thunderstick jr. . Or maybe it was discintinuing the deep thunderstick jr . , or maybe it was " improving " the wiggle wart . Or maybe it was discontinuing the storm colors ..... Havn't bought a Storm in years .

Rapala is having problems with their new DT series crankbaits also. Same problem, the lip breaks easily on structure. What good is a crankbait if you can't bounce it off structure! I haven't tried one of these yet, but I've never broken a Rapala lip yet. Maybe they switched to a cheaper material or a cheaper production method? I have had good luck with the new Wiggle Warts though...seem just as effective has the original models. I haven't used the warts in the river yet on salmon and steelies so they haven't been truly tested yet.
I find it interesting that this has been a problem since the time the new hot n tots were released, yet nothing has changed. Normark has to be aware of this problem.

I would try the new Producers and forget about those new hot-n-tots. They are cheaper and seem to catch fish as well as the old hot-n-tots. I was running 5 old style hot-n-tots and one producer yesterday on the bay and that one producer managed to catch 5 of the 15 walleye so they can't be to bad. I will definitely be picking more of them up at Frank's the next time I'm over there.

I've seen those producers as cheap as $.99 every once in awhile.

The double downers are almost identical, except for the eyes!
The Kaboom's, or dave storm lures are also pretty close, just a slight Peak in an otherwise rounded back. Why can't they be made Identical? we all know that answer. By the way I think I know where Dave storm got the KABOOM name, have ya seen the price of these things? 5 to 6 bucks a pop.;) I am so glad I have kept my hundreds of old tots, I almost sold a bunch of them once.
As they said once on the "Wizard of Oz" when dorothy and the others finally got to speak to the man behind the curtain. "what makes the hot-n-tot so hot?":p
Whatch the show sometime with the kids, I am serious, its part of the original script!

So I know of a few places that are still selling the old hot'n'tot's I have seen them between 5 and 6 dollars. Do you guys think it is worth it to bulk up on a bunch of these while they are still around, or are the double downers and others worth it at 3 dollars a piece??

SpartanAngler , I've got a box full of the old tot's , so personally I wouldn't spend $5-6 bucks for one . If I had to choose between an old tot & a Ka-Boom for the same price I'd pick the old tot . If I could get 2 Double Downers for the price of one Tot in the same color that I wanted , the DD would go home with me . IMHO .
