Fished the pigeon and the sturgeon this weekend on a hiking/fishing weekend with the lady. Turned out to be the nicest weekend yet for weather. hiked many nice trails along the pigeon in the state forest and saw some beautiful scenery and some really nice holes to fish, but didnt bring the rods as we, she wasnt in to fishing mode yet. We stopped and sat on a high cutbank and watched the water eddie below us. After a few minutes, a rise, and then another. I wished i was fishing it! so i had my heart set on walking back (a few miles) the next day and floating dries.
On Friday we loaded the pac up with the fishing gear, and other necessaries for a long day exploring. I was sure i could find the spot again. We hiked back to where I thought we were yesterday, but somehow got side tracked on and fished some other spots. I saw a few fish rising, and saw some flys coming off the water but cant ID them very well, they were white, or pale grayish in color and about size 16 or 18, as well as some larger mayflies. she had never trout fished but wanted to try after seeing that fish rise, so i let her try my ultralite and she was wading and making nice casts. after a while she gave up and was convinced that there were no trout in the river. we found the spot but couldnt get any strikes. We ended up hiking about 6 miles and fishing along the way with no sucess. We did see alot of wildlife, a huge elk that scared the sh-- out of us, many dear, and some red headed ducks ive never seen before cruising the river with the current.
My fishing trips are usually with the guys or solo, but this weekend was perfect, except for the lack of fish or skills. I ended up catching some fish right near my campsite. Got a small brookie maybe 7" on a pheasant tail #10, and got a 8" bow on a #14 caddis dry.
Also fished the sturgeon and came very close to losing it in a couple places between all the downed timber and lightning fast current. We canoed near rondo and dumped on a downed tree all the way across the river and got sucked right under it, but made it out ok. refreshing.
Beautiful country and wild rivers.
Going to the platte next weekend. :p
Thanks for the recomendations and info everyone.;)
