View Full Version : Are crankbaits still producing walleyes in lake Erie?

Most reports lately favor crawler harnesses and BB's for walleyes.

The same has been holding true for me also.

I pulled several types of cranks over the last couple of weeks and got next to nothing.
Switching to BB's has been the only thing to put fish in my freezer.

Can anyone give me an idea of what's going on

Jethro, I believe that the unstable weather this spring if you can call in that has the fish hugging the bottom right now. 3 seasons ago the same thing happened as far as the weather goes and the fish reacted the same way, once the water get a few degress warmer and the baitfish start to school up the eyes will start chasing and then it's KADDIE BAR DA DOOR (mickey redmond couldn't resist) get the cranks out and whack em and stack em. I did hear some reports of some guys using cranks and doing fairly well, I just couldn't get anything but silvers on them.

I will also say that this has been a great stretch for using crawlers w/ harnesses, and bb's, erie dearies were the real ticket for me today. I did catch a couple of spoons with snap weights.

Fished Friday the 13th fron 2p.m. till 5p.m. by myself in 23 to 24 fow and caught 5 'eyes to 22" on a purple/pink reef runner lil' ripper and 1 on a bb, so yes they are still working!

I don't think I said that they won't work, I'm saying they are not as effective at this point as using meat for bait. I would much rather use cranks as my bait of choice in Lake Erie, you cover more ground with a lot less mess. I trolled cranks for 1 1/2 hours yesterday, catching 10 or more silvers, trolled spoons for a half an hour and caught 2 eyes, then brought out the meat, hooked and landed many eyes in an hour or so. None stop action with meat= I'm not going to waste my time right now trolling for hours with something that is not producing as it usually does. I will say that in about a week or so, they're won't be a crawler to be found in my boat....
