View Full Version : Got two bucks without shooting

I filled my freezer, with enough left over to give a buck away.
I shot 3 deer last year, and still have some of that meat left, so I have past up on quite a few doe during the bow season. I figured that I'd fill a permit on a relatives farm. He wants the deer off the farm.
I have an aquaintence who hunts the UP. He loves to hunt, but his family won't eat venison.
He came over yesterday with a 10 point and a 3 point.
I found a home for one of the deer, and I will cut up the other.
My problem is that my hunting is now done. Yes, I'm thankful for meat in the freezer, but I find it a bit wasteful to kill 2 deer when you won't even eat it.
I told him that he should donate both deer to a food shelter, but he's too cheap to pay for the processing costs. He said "If I can't find a place for it, I'll dump it".
So, I hunted tonight, and watched a doe and 2 yearlings walk within 15 yards of me. I thought "What will I do with another deer?" I
let them walk.
I am thankful for a full freezer, but I feel a little cheated. I'm a hunter who missed the thrill because a killer got greedy.
I just needed to blow off some steam.

Maybe your buddy can find someone to process the deer for him, its not that hard of a job. That way he can donate it to the local mission.

Do you know of an organization that will take a deer that I process? All that I know of, will only take deer that are done up by a state inspected processor.

I would hunt. Fill your tags and donate the venison. If you are still wondering if you should use that tag while you stare down that next deer, just ask yourself, "Wouldn't it be nice for somebody else to have venison for Christmas dinner?" Then just make your decision.

Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger has a website at www.sportsmenagainsthunger.org (http://www.sportsmenagainsthunger.org)

All of the rules to donate and the drop off stations are listed there. Cash donations and gifts of canned food and domestic meats are also accepted. Their phone number is (313) 278-FOOD.

I've read that this organization has a pilot program this year, where MSAH is covering the processing fee at several processors around the state. This is where a cash donation would help.

If you shot a deer and need to get rid of it, you can give it me and Watercop. We are a couple of college student that are always looking for free food.

I have a similar problem...Got 2 nice bucks, filled the freezer, still have a doe tag and want to use it. I can't seem to shake the guilts that everyone will think I'm a "killer" and not a hunter if I do.

I'm thinking of filling it and donating the meat, (I can't really afford to process another one, but knowing that the money I spend will help someone in need should be reason enough.) Do I have deer fever??Is it wrong ??

why dont tou guys just buy a book that shows how to butcher deer up yourselves, all the right cuts, its not that hard.i do alot of my own,but always know people who would like to have some venison.my question is why are you done huntin tom222 unless the deer that were given to you were not tagged by the person that killed them!what is stopping him or her from going out and shooting more then worrying about what to do with them.i dont care for people like that, thats what gives the legitimate hunters a bad name..........

I find it interesting that only one of the above posts expresses any disdain for a hunter who shoots two deer and is willing to dump them if his buddy doesn't take them. To me that is unbelievable. To top it off he is too cheap to pay for processing so the meat can be donated to feed the hungry. This guy deserves no respect! I could say more but I'll leave that for others.

Processing a deer is so easy!! Take the time, cut it up yourself, and do whatever you feel is right. I wont get into the killing of two deer..... All I will say is that it is not very hard or time consuming to cut up your own deer. There is no need to waste the money to have it processed, you can do it yourself! There is also no need to waste a deer that someone has shotten for whatever reason!!!!

The deer were legally tagged. I was a bit frustrated at the time of the post, because I had more than enough meat, and no place to go with the rest.
I know that there are organizations that will take donated venison, but only if it's processed by a licensed processor.
I always cut my own up, and have decided that if and when I take another deer, I will cut it up myself and pass it along to a needy family on my own, and just skip the organizations.
The whole mentality of killing as many deer as you can, just because you can, when you won't even eat it, had me frustrated and I suppose that I just needed to blow off a bit of steam.
I'm enjoying a freezer full of meat, and plan on stalking a corn feild one more time. If I take one, I'll donate it myself.
Thanks for the input.
