My brother works downtown doing maintenance in one of the buildings on the river and he said there were literally 100's of Gar under the bridge down there today.
I've never fished for them, but I know they get big and I'd imagine they'd be a decent fight.

Trying to hook, let alone land a gar pike would be difficult. I've had them on a few times in a local lake, where I could see them, but have never landed one. They were small, being only something over 2 feet, including the snout. I've speared bigger ones, the largest being about five feet long.
That long snout of there's is an effective fish getter. You'd have to wait awhile for the fish to swallow the bait.

We used to chase them when we were kids while hunting turtles in our little orange plastic "Sport Yak" boat. Some appeared longer than our boat. They were pretty scary. We never got the nerve to actually try to catch one.
They are some pretty toothy creatures..
I would think steel pike leaders would be in order with live bait or something.

most people dont know it but those gars get really huge.
ive hooked ones pushing 5 ft long and some get really fat. i fish for them in the marinas of lake st clair when there in. the fight harder than any bass in the lake thats for sure. a little secret lure you guys might want to try is a micro-spinner bait, and the trick is tie a piece of potato bag string stuff (i forgot the name of it) to the end of the hook and run it off about 4 inches back. the beak of the gar usually clamps down on the whole thing but the string gets caught on the rows of teeth and they stay on even without getting hooked sometimes. good luck...good colors are white blue and silver. combinations work best.

i picked one up this morning while i was fly fishing for bass. the hook never penetrated, only the fur got caught up in the front teeth. i also saw a few swimming around.
