So were we about to be fried into those little burn pieces of toast that you find in the bottom of the toaster? I look at the Doppler and it shows no rain for the whole state of Michigan. As we get out on the lake dark clouds are rolling in but were close to shore and I feel safe. Now it’s pouring down rain and ever once in a while you can here the rumble of thunder but it’s a long long ways off. I have a fishing poll in its holder and it’s pointing strait in the air. And all of a sudden it starts to let off a light buzz. I don’t want to freak out the other guy but I’m thinking holy craps were going to be zapped as I’m heading towards shore. And the buzzing stops about a second or so later. I would like to think that it was the fishing line making the noise but it wasn’t, it had that static sound to it.

Cool pic lawnboy. I believe the sound is created by the graphite in the fishing pole. Not sure of the specifics. I know I'd be tripping out that is for sure.
Glad you're not toast!! :D

Had a similar situation a few years back. We were perch fishing and I was using a graphite rod. The dark clouds started moving in and we could hear thunder in the distance. Then my rod starts buzzing, softly at first then gradually getting louder until it shock's me pretty good. The rod stopped buzzing after it discharged, but then you could hear it start again ever so slightly until it built up and shocked me again!! When the rod started buzzing for the third time and getting louder I was smart enough to touch my buddy's arm and shock him!! This happened about 3 or 4 times until we decided to get the heck off the water before it was too late.
Only the graphite rod was producing shocks. The fiberglass rods did nothing.
Kinda weird!

Was up in frankfort on the pier for a walk to see if they were doing any good as the steele weren't cooperating and there were 2 ladies out there among 10 or so people and we could hear the buzzing sound and every time the lady went to grab her pole a bright flash would jump 3 inches to her finger and she would let out a giggle. Well after a few times she asked us if we ever seen anything like that and said it happens all the time right before a thunderstorm. was lightly raining and lightning all over. Well we went back to the river no second thoughts.;)

you guys were right to be kinda freakd out, when a bolt of lightning hits, it is a cloud releasing its positive energy (some big scientific name i dont remember) the static on a person increases, i had the same thing my rod was shocking me and my hair was standing on end, most of the time lightning doesn't hit, but when that happens is a good idea to get the heck outta ther!
