I just bought a 14' boat and motor, but I forgot to ask about the fuel oil raito. I used the directions on the gas can which was half pint to every gallon of gas (seemed pretty rich). It fouled out the plugs pretty quick. Then I went with a 32:1 it seemed to run a bit better but after I ran a tank of gas the plugs fouled out again. Im not sure of the date of the motor but it was deffinetly built some time in the 50's. What oil mixture should I use or does this sound like another problem.

the engines that were made in the 50's were 25 to 1,,,but we have much better 2-cycle oil now ,,,go ahead and run 50 to 1 and it will be fine,,and you will like the way it runs a lot better

Musky25,
I've got a '61 Evinrude 40 hp that I used to run 24:1 (mfg. recommendation). But I've switched to 50:1 running a good quality TC-W3 oil and it works fine and smokes A LOT less and doesn't leave nearly the slick that it used to.
I've been told by MANY that 50:1 is fine in older engines if you use a good quality TC-W3 oil.
Good luck.

Thanks, I'll try the 50:1. I know what you mean about the oil slick. When I had 16:1 it left a pretty bad oil slick. Again I appreaciate the advice.

Thanks jpollman
You gave me the TC-W3 tip a while back , to make my old outboard a bit more eco friendly.
I took your advice on the better oil and noticed the differance .
Less SMOKE and the performance is as good if not better.

Glad to hear it outsider !
I'm very happy since I made the switch. I don't feel like I'm making nearly as much of an impact on the environment anymore while running my "antique". :) She runs MUCH better and I can breathe again while under power. :)

I'm sorry I have another question about this same motor. Like I said I don't know much about motors, thats why I'm trying to fix this one. It will run but the carberator leaks like crazy. I opened it and the gasket is real soft. Also in the carb there is a donut shaped piece that I'm not sure what it is but it almost looks burnt and has some small cracks and bubbles in it. could this also couse the carb to leak the way it does.

that pice you are talking about is your float,,and if it dose not float or is not set correctly it will cause your carb to flood,,,
I am not trying to sound harsh,,but if you don,t know your way around a carb. you should not take it apart..
also you said your engine was made in the 50's but you did not say what make it was,,,anyway most of the floats back then were made of corke and will not get waterloged with gas,,,the only thing that seems to mess them up is water

where exactly is the carb leaking from?

Tonga I'm sorry the make of the motor is a johnson Seahorse 10hp. I cant find a model number anyware. Its leaking from the gasket but it didn't look bad. However if it is do they still make gaskets for outboards that are that old.

well I don't think they make them anymore? but you can probably find a set if you check enough old boat repair shops,,,I was going to tell you to shop online but you will need a model number,,in fact you will have a hard time getting anything for that engine without a model number!!
you will have to take the engine or atleast the carb with you when you go shopping
all I can say is look for the oldest OMC shop you can find ,,,youknow one that still works on engines that old..
OR you could always make your own gaskets,,but I really think you need to have someone els look at that carb!!!!
are you anywhere close to Fair Haven MI are you ???

I really appreaciat all the advice tonga. Sorry but I live all the way down in Monroe. I was planning on taking the carb to breast bay marina. They work on Johnson outboards hopefully they have the parts. I didn't pay much for the motor and it does run I'd just like to fix some of the problems it has.

Musky25,
I know it's a hike for you. But if Brest Bay Marina can't help, check with Northwestern Boat Co. in Southfield. Their # is 248-356-2477. They've helped my out a few times with my '61 OMC.
Good luck !

my 2 cents is to run the mfg rec. oil ratio as I have come across several 50's era Johnson and Evinrude motors that have blown due to not enough oil. They used roller bearings as opposed to the needle bearing used today. You can still get gaskets and just about everything else for these motors. I have a friend that has a collection of about 100 of these and they all run. The carb's are pretty easy to work on.

My '68 Evinrude runs 50:1 and runs great. Call Ben at Lockeman's with your serial number and he will tell you. He is the best with Johnson/Evinrude's. This is the only brand he will work on.
