On Sunday, I snuck out from under my weightly list of outdoor chores and took hubby with me to shoot some 3-D at Detroit Archer's Club in West Bloomfield. I had received e-mails from them reassuring me that I could shoot my crossbow--they just changed their rules. I had first shot 3-D at WWOW, and was looking for another opportunity.

We arrived a little after one. It was very quiet. I was expecting more of a crowd. At the clubhouse, we registered for the shoot and were told ours would be the first crossbow ever on their course. Wow. They seemed excited. We felt very welcome.

We warmed up on the range. Not a good idea. I nearly lost a bolt because it buried itself so far in the bale I couldn't find it. At least I was shooting plastic vanes. Feathers would've been trashed.

The stakes for the first four targets were next to the clubhouse. We shot respectably on #1 and #2, then the word got out and we had a crowd as we began to set up for #3. I had no idea what kind of antelope(?) it was nor where to shoot it. Next time I'll bring binoculars. Anyway, I dropped my butt pad next to the stake and sat down. Behind me I heard an indignant "She can't sit down! That's like shooting a rifle." but the speaker was immediately shushed by other observers. I aimed and fired, thinking I had hit a little too high. Behind me there were approving murmurs and the guy waiting to shoot #2 glassed my target and said, "That's an X." I got up and handed the xbow to my hubby. Again, the indignant voice, "They can't use the same bow!." More shushing. Hubby knelt, aimed and fired. Another "X." Too fun.

The crowd dispersed and we shot the course only seeing the groups in front or behind us. It was a lovely day--no bugs, but plently of poison ivy. I had to watch where I sat!

Unfortunately, that double X was the high point of our round. Our overall scores, 217 and 225, respectively, reflected the difficulties we had with other targets. Back at the clubhouse, the guys were sure surprised. I guess they thought we would bullseye the ten-ring every time!

I wanted to go out again on Monday, but got stuck with a stray dog (owner finally came). I don't know when I'll get another chance to shoot 3-D, but I am looking forward to it.

See ya out there,
Michelle
