Lookin for help on a strange one here. I have a 5hp honda 4 stroke made back in 85. Only has aprox 30 hours on it. Sat dormant from 87 to last year.

I'm using it as a kicker and heres whats weird. When I turn the motor to the left it revs up to what you would think is 3/4 throttle. I have plenty of feul line so its not getting crimped. I cannot figure out what is happening here. The turning of the motor would have nothing to do with fuel lines or throttle inside the hood because those stay in the same place as it turns. I did not run it with the hood off yet so I can't say if the throttle cable is moving or not.

I am by no means a motor expert so any help would be appreciated.

Any thoughts?

I think you need to run it with the hood off just to make sure the throttle is not hanging up on something,,I can not for the life of me think of how this could happen, but something has to be causing this to happen,,
I bet it will be a REAL GAS! when you find it HA LOL

Ran it with the top off and here is what I saw.

I have the turning tension very high because i have the kicker connected to the main motor with a bracket. i figured this way it would keep the engine from moving when weight shifted in the boat from someone hanging out to rig the downriggers. All of those with loose cable steering know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, the steering handle with the throttle is not hard connected to the rest of the motor I assume for vibration reduction for your hands. When I was turning the motor, the torque was slightly seperating the handle from the housing and therefore stretching the throttle cable and making the engine rev. Wild eh?

All I did is loosen the tension for the steering on the kicker and problem solved!

Man I'm glad it was that easy!!!!!!!!!!

Now my next question. Is there a way to tighten up the cable steering for my Main engine? If I'm not holding the wheel, the engine sways with the weight transfer in the boat and makes fishing alone almost impossible

Thanks guys

or is it a telaflex style cable?

Not pulleys Tonga,

Not sure of the technical name. Basic cable steering system you see on most boats. It's a 97 Tracker with standard equip. Hope this helps or do you need more info?

Thanks

check all bushings and hookups for slop ,,you know have someone hold the wheel still ,then go back and shake your main engine with your hands, now while you do this look for where the slop is comeing from,, I dont know what kind of setup you have but I am sure it is at least something like a tellaflex cable,,
look for worn and loose stuff,,you know slop
also have a look under your dash at the box on the back of the wheel,,,it's probably a round box I don't think they would put a rack in a boat that small,,,anway look at it real good with a flashlight,,you may have some sort of tention adjuster on the box,
if you do add some tention,,,but after you do check the steering through the complete range of motion, and if you feel any hint of binding or stiff spots back the tention of till this is no longer present!!,,,You do not want the box to lock up while you are up on plane
