All of you guys out their that think that they can sneak up on a deer during gun...please give it up. I spent days up in the tree looking at people that thought they could sneak through the woods...well guess what 99% of the time I could hear you long before I could ever see that orange coat and hat some 200 yards away. Only some of the best can do this type of hunting, and the rest of you only push the deer deeper into the swamps.

Lawnboy, gimme a break. i have seen MORE DEER by "STALKING" them . I have spent my fair share in a tree stand waiting. BUT trust me, when you are on the move i personally think you stand a better chance of seeing deer, than to have them wander by browsing for food or running at a break neck speed. And one of the prime areas i stalk is "THE SWAMP" ..^^ SWIFT, SILENT AND DEADLY ^^

Lawnboy, I must also disagree with you. I have always stalked. The difference is I agree they are in the swamp which is why I stalk the swamp. So when they get away from me and many have, I admitt, but many haven't too; I will be the one pushing them out of the swamp to you. Happy Thanksgiving!

What is the reason behind this post anyway? I don't understand this!
I can stalk on deer during any season and I believe anyone else can also, that really doesn't matter.
If hunters want to hunt this way I think it is great. That is why they call it hunting. My Native American ancesters hunted this way all the time and they didn't carry a gun!
Don't tell hunters they shouldn't hunt this way! They are HUNTERS, and they should hunt the way they choose...SnS

"the finding and killing of the game is after all but part of the whole. The free,self-reliant,adventurous life, with its rugged and stalwart democracy;the wild surroundings, the grand beauty of the scenery, the chance to study the ways and habits of the woodland creatures-all these unite to give to...the hunter...peculiar charm. The chase is among the best of all national pastimes;it culivates that vigorous manliness for the lack of which in a nation,as in an individual, the possession of no other qualities can possibly atone."...Theodore Roosevelt

First of all I never told no one to hunt this way...what I said is that most people can't hunt this way. Look how many times are you in your stand and it good hunting hours and then you start to hear it...the slow sneak and before long you see him comming, looking like rambo. Again I know that we have people that can do this type of hunting but when your looking at opening gun week and you have a million people out in the woods and half never hunt but this week and they are trying to walk up on a deer....never, it will never happen...and if it dose...it was a freak thing. For those of you that understand that stalking in swamps is a good way and you can do it...go for you :)

You know what I can't stand? Ambushing stand hunters. Hunters who sit way up high in a tree so the deer can't smell them, or hunters that lean against a tree with the wind in their face. I also don't like hunters that wear camo...that isn't fair at all. I also don't like hunters that wear warm boots so they can sit still longer. The only hunters I like are the ones that go hunting butt naked with a sharp stick. ROFL I hope you're not serious!

"...please give it up" this is what you wrote lawnboy. Maybe you can define this post for all.
It sure sounds to me like you are telling some hunters to "please give it up" and meaning not to hunt this way. I may be wrong, but that is what I make of it, but you wrote it. How about you?
Feel free to change your opinion after the fact. They do it in Florida every day :(

I think as long as the hunting is done within the law, go for it! Some are better at stalking then others, some like to sit and take it in, and some just get plain and simply lucky... Whatever may be the case, as long as it's legal and something you enjoy, I see no reason to "give it up".

Just another thread started by someone who is rather obtuse in his thinking.

Obviously his way of deer hunting is the only way.

Go figure.

I sneak up on deer all the time. In fact to take the seven point on opening afternoon I used a "stalk and grunt" technique. Honestly, there is nothing more exciting or satisfying to a hunter than tricking a mature buck out of his bed. He came out, ears back hair all ruffled, using that stiff legged, I'm gonna kick yer butt, gate.

Anyway, three tips for sneaking up on deer are; sound like a deer, look like a deer, and smell like a deer. This can be done wearing blaze orange too. <----<<<

I have to practice to get better. Just think, how many stalking hunters didn't you see?

Ok guys you got me.....but now how many of you do it during opening gun and on state land? And have success? I can see in the swamps but what about in the open areas and woods?

I took my gun deer on state land. I do not hunt open areas because pressured deer head to the thickest cover they can find. <----<<<

I once bagged a deer with just that, a bag! I stalked him and when I got close enough, I through a burlap bag over his head!! he took off and ran right into a tree....WHACK!!!! down he went from a broken neck. Wow, what a rush.... :) Good posts all, even the serious ones :)

Considering this guy's other thread "one bad year" I am thinking he just likes to stir the pot and see what kind of argument he can start. Argumentation isn't nearly as fun as some think it is.
