Just picked up an old Chrysler 8 Hp for backup motor. It starts great, pumps good water and the lower unit oil looked good. Now the bad part is, I can't get it to idle down unless I pull the choke out. It has no booklet and seller didn't know the year. It has the Beige and Gold motor cover. New plugs and gas didn't help either. The carb didn't have many adjustment screws and there is a hole for a missing knob that connects to a rod under the carb but I can't see where it goes. Thanks!!

Ok I have not worked on very many Chrys. outboards but it sound like your idle air screw needs to be adjusted,,so somewhere on that carb ,probably the front you should have a needle screw for the idle,,and I think you will want to turn it in.
get the engine running in the water out of gear of course, now turn your idle screw in about 1/8 turn at a time and give the engine about 30 seconds to react to each adjustment,,keep doing this untill the engine smoothes out and idles
if this dose not work, it is possible if this engine sat for any time with fule in it ? that the idle circuit may be gummed up
Ok the easy cure for this is the $1.98 tune up witch for anyone reading is a handy little tip
what you do is get you moter running,,head on down the highway
uh um sorry Stepenwolf flash back
OK get your moter running, out of gear of course now reve it up real good, now with the engine still turning 4000 rpm put your hand over the carb and choke it till it almost stalls,,then remove your hand and let it sputter back up to 4000rpm,,repeat this a few times
what this dose is when you choke the engine at that high of a RPM it puts a tramendous vacume on all the small ports and often times it will clear them
I have used this one on some engines that ran so rough that you would think they needed to be shot
If this fails to do the trick, then the carb will need to be taken apart and properly cleaned with carb cleaner and compressed air
Oh yea never and I mean never try to clear a orifice with a pice of wire,,,just let the air and carb cleaner do the work!!
and there is one more thing that can cause this
and that is bad reed valves or a bad crank case seal,,
you see a 2-stroke works on a constant change from crankcase pressure to crankcase vacume and if you have bad reed valves or a crankcase leak it will no longer to be abile to mantain enough vacume/pressure to chare the cylinders at low rpm
But I would start at the top of this list
oh yea if you try the $1.98 tune-up you may not know if it worked untill you repeat the carb adjustment again !!!
good luck

Man Tonga that's just like having the motor manual in hand and reading all the troubleshooting scenarios. Thanks for the info can't wait to try them out. I tried the idle adjustment but that wasn't the problem. It revs up then when I move the throttle to slow it stalls unless I manually choke it.

Well we don't really live that close as I live up by Frankenmuth. I'll try those scenarios to see if they will correct the problem. I also got a suggestion of a bad coil as being the culprit and I think they are expensive so I hope yours does the job. I'll be heading to Rice Lake for a week then Quebec for 10 days so I hope I can get it to run better but I can still run it for a backup as is I think. Thanks for the info.

When are you going to Rice Lake? I'm heading over there 6-28 to 7-05. If we are going to be there the same time we will have to look each other up....Patch

Patch I'll be heading over there on 5-31 to 6-06. I'm staying at the Alpine Resort on the southside of lake out of Roseneath.
