I almost didn't want to post this because it would seem to make me look like I have no clue, but I'm at my last wits end with this problem. On my trailer I needed to replace the electrical hook ups. I hooked up like colors to each other, grounded it and went through and checked all the fuses. After all this I still only have running lights. No brake lights or turn signals.
Please help me I have tried almost everything. I'm leaving for upnorth tonight, I have someone following me but would still like to get this problem worked out.

Did you check the harness from the car? Check to see if you have turnsignals coming from the harness. A 12v test light is a good tool.
Dont worry about colors until you've figured out which is which coming from the harness/plug on your vehicle. Many times vehicles and trailers are not wired by alike colors.

How do you go about doing that? I am a little ignorant on this subject.

I got a 4-flat tester at west marine for like $4. has 4 leds. Will tell you if your working at the vehicles connector in like 3 seconds. I've seen them at auto stores as well. Always check your ground on the trailer(although if you have running lights, probably not the problem...)

Turn and brake lights are on the same wire, I have a 2000 chevy pick up, under the hood is a fuse block, mine was blown on these very ones, since my truck turns were working I didn't think about a seperate fuse. check there for a seperate fuse you might have

What year/make truck do you have.
My 1995 Grand Cherokee has a 5 to 4 wire converter box that was bad. I jumpered the running and brake lights so they work, but need to replaced the converter box to get the turn signals straight. The cost is $95.00 for the JEEP replacement harness.

Check your ground. sounds silly but you can have lights but with a bad ground it will do all kinda silly stuff. just run a wire from your fram of your veh to your trailer to test.

niner93,
Did you get your lights working before you left?
What did it end up being?
