The price difference between a bow mount and a transom mount trolling motor was huge. It's over 100% more for the bow mount. For my usage I'll be happy with the transom mount.

So does everyone here use trolling motor batteries or just a regular car battery?

i always go with a marine grade battery or a deep cycle they hold charges much better than a car battery and can be charged over and over your car battery just starts ya if you cut the altenator cord youll have one sorry battery:p def get a good battery dont skimp there you'll pay later!!!!:D

Beave,

Good decision, you won't be disappointed with the 50lb thrust, and a transom mount will serve you well.

As far as batteries, I used two inexpensive batteries from Meijer, I seem to remember they were about $24 each. They were marine starting batteries, or combination starting/deep cycle. They were not specifically deep cycle. I had great success with them. The reason I had two was that jigging on the Detroit River means you are running the trolling motor almost continuously, and 2 batteries gives you almost a whole day of continuous operation. It depends on your style of fishing if you will need 2 batteries or 1.

Beave, don't mess with car batteries, buy a quality marine deepcycle or at the very least a dual purpose deep cycle/starting battery. The deep cycle batteries are specificaly built for trolling motors and marine electronics. They hold a charge much longer and they are able to withstand regular charges without damage. Starting batteries and car batteries are designed to give short quick bursts of power, not continous power.
