My ship to shore cant be heard past 1/4 mile. Anybody know if its the radio or the antenna how can I tell? Also it keeps going back to chan 16 all the time. If I have to buy a new radio what are the sugestions on a brand and price range?

Sounds like the antenna/antenna connection to me. As far the going back to channel 16. On my radio if you push the priority button, it will constantly jump back to 16, without scanning the channels I have selected.

If it keeps going back to ch16 you may have a bad power connection. The radio may actually be turning on and off without you noticing. Also with a bad power connection you will not be getting enough juice to the radio and that is way it cant be heard at long distances.
Just my thoughts
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.:D

Just looked at the wiring for my radio and found the inline fuse socket had broken, one of those nice things to notice in the driveway, might have worked long enough to get a radio check.
I would guess it's an intermittant power problem like bluedevil said. Mine didn't look too far from doing the same thing.
