Deer numbers?

I've read some posts saying the deer numbers are at an all time high. Others that say their at an all time low. Does anyone really know? I'm currently unaware of what the DNR estimates the number to be. Although, I've been told they estimate about thirty per square mile in our neck of the woods. I can remember a few years back they estimated the herd to be around two million. At that time, that was the highest it had ever been. I think theres less now, but I certainly can't say. Just wondered if anyone knows the current estimates?

I also consider it funny that every year I hear about "record kills" or "near record kills" even though I see a lot fewer deer than I used to. But then I guess the politicians know a lot more about the deer herd than do the hunters.

The deer herd varies fron area to area but I dont feel the DNR has a clue on numbers.

The area I hunt (Livingston County) the deer herd is way down as far as seeing deer because of last years slaughter (UNLIMITED DOE LICENSES). I do believe that the DNR on a whole is trying to do a good job of regulating the deer herd in some areas.

I have been hunting only for the past 7 years. So I have little to compare. However my grandfather told me that in the past he would see 60 deer on opening day. so I really do question the DNR's position on deer numbers. Does anyone else remeber days like that?

My father talks about days like that, but they were before the three year any deer slaughter in the early fifties and when the majority of deer were concentrated in the northern lower. Maybe someone else either remembers this time or has relatives that remember this or a different time frame. Come to think of it, the slaughter of the 50's isn't much different than the liberal amount of doe permits available today. Guess history might be repeating itself.

Looks like they estimate about 1.9 million before bow season.
