The Ausable is winding down fishing wise. Most males are dark, dark, dark and all scared up and most females are already spawned out. A lot of beds are empty, but dont get me wrong, you can still find areas with a decent amount of fish, but most have people there already. My buddy and I fished it yesterday afternoon/evening. Got to this spot and told my buddy we would hook a fish within 20 casts. My first drift thru, BOOM, set the hook and pulled in a 10inch planter. A few drifts later my buddy did the same thing. After an hour or so of nothing, I did alittle lure change and first drift thru, BOOM, fish on, fish off, a dark male jumped and threw the hook. A few drifts later, BOOM, fish on, fought it for a couple mins, but eventually took me into some timber and broke my off. Then we had a while without any action. Then my buddy hooked into one, but his drag wasnt set right, took him way down stream and eventually got off. We caught a few more planters in this spot and moved to a different spot for the last half hour we had to fish. Me and my buddy each took a end of the run and just as my buddy was packing it up and walking toward me I made one last drift thru and BOOM, fish on, she was a screamer and and jumper. Finally got her to shore and it was a spawned out 7 lb hen. This may sound like a good day to some, but this was in about a 7 hour span. So if you want to hook some of the last steelhead for the spring get there now, who knows how long they will stay in there with as messed up as this spring is. Hopefully I can get my pictures from the last couple trips out and get them posted.
