Anybody out there think it's even worth trying for steel over the holiday wkd?
As in, will there be any steel to fish for? I hear the suckers are in.
Any predictions out there?

Sorry, I'm not Ausable_steelhead, but I can conjecture with my two cents for you: I've fished steel memorial weekend on the Ausable in previous years. There is usually a fishable amount of steel left in the river by then, although the numbers are definitely not staggering that late in the year. With the late thaw and delayed run this year, I would guess that Memorial weekend will be better than years gone by. The lefovers will be dark, but there should still be some hanging around. Don't rule out fishing the mouth for dropbacks either! They can be very hungry on their way back to the big lake.
Most other fisherman will have moved on to different species by memorial day, so at least you won't be fighting any crowds for the fish that remain in the system. Good luck if you decide to give it a try...I would definitely check for an update by A_S as the end of May nears, though.

krankem's right there usally is decent steelhead on memorial day, last year i landed my last one on june 2nd......i had 6 fish in front of me and was the only guy there all day.
I'm going up memorial day also but with the real slow run that has been going on the au sable i really dont think the steelie's will be a very good option then......then again i could be wrong, wouldnt be the first time. I would suggest you look out over the high banks and below the dam when you go up cus if you dont see any fish at those spot's then the rest of the river isnt really going to be any good, then you can join us in mio,cus it sound's like i wont be the only one there;) hey bmbiff what day you gonna be there , i'll be below the dam on saterday.

Well, I'm not sure either, this year's run was too weird and un-predictable to pattern so, I don't know. But last year, I went on May 20th, and there quite a few fish around, so..........

Thanks guys for the input, think I'll plan on hitting the last of them at Foote and the pier that wkd then. If you see a guy wearing brown neoprene's and a greenish fly vest and Washington apple hat just stop on over. Haven't met anyone yet out on the water from this site, besides my bro Max.

I have fished the Ausable every Memorial weekend for at least the last 7 years and in the last three have done fairly well on stealies. Last year I even managed one that looked as if it had just came up river. But for the most part they are pretty dark. I usually try about 1/2 mile downstream from the Highbanks. Very few people fishing and fair numbers of fish. The only downside to fishing for steal on the Ausable (Memorial dey) is that it's hard to keep those little planter trout off your line. Then again everythings open so you have a better chance of taking something home for the table.
