Late report, but pmtiny and I were up for the past week castin' & blastin' (steel/browns and turkey ).
Got to the Ausable around 11:00 AM on Wed, 7 May. Fished at the first bend down from the dam. It looked like most people had at least one fish on a stringer and saw one guy leave with a limit. We fished a few hours and ended up 1/1. We were using flies and spawn without any luck. Just before leaving for the day I saw a couple steelhead on a bed. Wouldn't take a fly so I put a deep-diving crank bait on. After a couple casts I got it right in front of one of the steelies. Pissed him off and he grabbed it. Ended up landing my first Ausable steelhead. A nice male. (This fish was the 4th steelhead I've ever landed in a river, the three others were taken out of the Rifle over the past 10 years)
