OK i got a question.................

After a slow weekend and hearing of other's slow weekends on the ausable(with a few exceptions) i wondered,if the steelie's dont actully make a good run this spring on the ausable then what are they doing, will they spawn in lake huron, and if they do what effect will that have on future runs for the river? Will they remember that and spawn in the lake next year? I mean they have to spawn right?

just wondered, you dont know if you dont ask.

I have been told that, unlike salmon, steelhead do not have to spawn. If the conditions are not right some will not even go into the river or they may just go back out into the lake without spawning.

Dont quote me on this though. Just what I have been told.

we talked about that last week with the guys at wellmans and bunyon town... the answer seems that no one can remember this late of a spring.... alot of theories but nobody seemed to really have an answer.... most of the fish were done spawning that I say caught.... I just hope that steelheading does not end up like smelt dipping....

Read what John King reported. http://www.michigansportsman.com/Weekly_Report.htm
I believe he is hinting that the hatchery fish just didnt fare as well as the wild fish. Something to think about next time you hold a unclipped fish in your hands. Riverman
