Took the Sara Smile for her shakedown today.
The first entrance to Sterling is still closed, 1/8 mile east is Waterworks Rd., you can access the park from there. The ramp is open.
Beware of shallow water in the channel, even with an east wind blowing water in-shore there were spots that were less than 2 feet. There are no buoys in as of today, so if you don't know the channel, don't even think about it. YOU WILL GET STUCK!
Now for the fun part, Umpa Dave and I took 10 Walleye, 2 at 18", the rest over 20". Those '99 year class fish are fat and sassy, and there are a lot of them! The DNR estimates 6-9 million and I believe it from the action 2 years ago.
All fish came from 14-16 fow, straight out from Sterling. Most came on silver and blue Hot-N-Tots, 85 back, a couple came on black and gold Shad-Rap RS, 90 back. 2.0-2.2 SOG was the ticket. We ran the in-line boards for a while, but it wasn't necessary. I do think they add some action to the lures, but flat-lines worked well too.
Most boats (not many) were casting or drifting, but catching only a few if any, I'll never understand why people ignore suspended, aggressive fish and concentrate on the nuetral fish hugging bottom!
Water temp. was 54 deg. and surprisingly it was only stained, not mud. Visibility was around 2 feet with Hot-N-Tots.
