A coworker asked if I would like to go fishing for walleye on Saginaw Bay. He said it was trolling and does not have the action of fly-fishing but he usually catches the fish that he takes home to the table. I am going because it is fishing.
He said he uses Rapella (not sure about the spelling) lures.

Does anybody have tying instructions for Walleye trolling flies (is it really a fly if you troll?)?

Labrat,

If your co-worker said he is using Rapala lures, there isn't anything you need to tie. You might ask him what size and color lures he normally uses and bring a couple with you on the trip. The lures are balsa wood or other hard material with several hooks. You could check out www.rapala.com to get more familiar with the lures.

Enjoy the trip, the walleye action is picking up and you should have a good time.

If you fish at night you'll do the best using #18 rapalas off planer boards with 30 to 100ft leads. During the day I like #14 husky jerks with snap weights or the deep diving model with 50 to 100ft leads. I don't know if you could catch them with fly's in the deeper water but maybe at night wading from shore you could throw a fly that resembles a smelt to catch them?? Hope this helps. Good fishin!
