So what do you think is the best/fastest food to plant in the spring? I had many turkey feeding in my field that was minimaly planted in the fall with field rye only.
(sometimes 50 or more at a time) I walked the property today and found some tracks. I had some great toms in the fall and would like to attract hens to keep the toms around.
Best suggestions?

Don't only think food plot. Also think nesting cover in the spring. Hens will stay close to brushy/woody cover while nesting as well as venture off into food forage. Annual grasses will come up quickly and draw insects that are the major protein source of both adult and poult turkeys in the spring. Nesting cover will also benefit the pheasant hens and other ground nesting birds in the area.

Try planting Wildlife buffet. This will provide excellant cover and food for the early spring and rest of the years to come.

live outside of Detroit area. want to plant a small plot of rye in the spring for deer. where would you recommend getting rye. also, when should it be planted, and will it last to deer season, or will it need to be replanted periodically?

I had three different plantings last year. The turkeys didn't seem to care. I think they like digging arounbd in them for the grasshoppers......marty
